It’s Friday, September 18, 2020, and time for our Homeschool Resources Virtual Field Trip. I would like to ask you to check out Web Gallery of Art
Recommended Websites: Web Gallery of Art
Age Range: 11-18 (Grades 6112, with parental supervision) The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture from the 13th to 19th centuries. It contains over 49,500 images. Artist biographies, pictures of the artwork, commentaries on the artwork, and (best of all) virtual guided tours are available at this site.
This site is so remarkably comprehensive that when you select a particular tour – say, the “Overview of Italian Painters” – a screen pops up with a map of Italy asking you to pick the region of Italy that produced the “school” of artists whose work you would like to see.
Once you choose the region, another screen pops up with a description of the school of art that was popular there, and a list of artists. Choose an artist, and a screen appears that shows their artwork, along with a biography of the artist and commentary on their artwork. There are currently 16 tours available at the site – including a tour of the Sistine Chapel.
If you don’t want to tour, you can search for the artwork you want to see by artist, artwork title, region, etc. The index and cross-references are well-designed to help you locate the art you want to see. In addition, you can explore the site in a “duality” mode – viewing 2 pieces of artwork at once to contrast and compare!
Another great aspect of this site is that is has a free postcard service. Do you see a picture that you think your friend would enjoy? Then select the postcard button and it will be sent to your friend in the form of an electronic postcard instantly!
Oh, don’t forget to choose from among the selections of classical music you can listen to as you explore this site. They really have thought of everything to make your visit to the Web Gallery of Art enjoyable.
Visiting this site regularly would be like taking a college-level art history course. The text, paintings, sculptures, and history will provide continuous enjoyment for the whole family.
NOTE: Parents, as always, should preview the site and supervise internet access.
