With Halloween right around the corner and Charlie and David liking spooky scary things I thought it would be fitting to share our latest Homeschool Resource: Mummies with you. I believe this will be one lesson plan I let David and Charlie work on together. Would you like to join them?

There’s something about mummies. Those preserved human remains are powerful on several contradictory levels, sometimes simultaneously: They’re seductive, with an aura of mystery and rich antiquarian appeal; at the same time, mummies can be repellent because, well, they’re preserved human remains; and certainly they have the capacity to terrify as eerie avatars of mortality that have inspired a whole subgenre of horror fiction and film. Mummies are time capsules bearing secrets of the distant past and often stand as works of art; think of Egyptian sarcophaguses, with their elaborately carved and painted ornamentation. On a more modest scale, the 7,000-year-old mummies of South America, crafted by an early maritime community known as the Chinchorros, resemble small statues, hardly as grand as the Egyptians’ handiwork but with a kind of rugged and deeply affecting beauty.

Monday:

Write your Spelling Words 5 times each in ABC order in your Spelling Notebook.

Tuesday:

Write your Spelling words in your Spelling Notebook and include a definition for each word.

Wednesday:

Use your Spelling words inside a story you create and include a illustration for the story in your Spelling notebook.

Or use your Spelling words inside sentences.

Thursday:

Take a Pre-Spelling Test

Write any words you missed 5 times each.

Friday:

If you missed any words on the Pre-Test retake the test and if you miss any words write them 5 times each.

If you made a 100 then take today off and do something fun.

Reading Class:

Charlie will be reading and Mummies and The Encyclopedia of Mummies Monday through Thursday for 30 minutes a day.

Once Charlie finishes reading each day he will write 2 facts he learned about Mummies in his Reading Journal.

Friday:

On Friday Charlie will turn the facts into a report he will readout loud.

Math Class:

Charlie will look up facts on Mummies which can be turned into 5 math problems for someone in his home to work out. Then they will use the facts to create 5 math problems for Charlie to do.

The math problems will be written in Charlie’s Math journal.

Drama Class:

Watch a movie on Mummies. Charlie picked out The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (1964). I will watch with Charlie Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955)

Charlie will dress up like the Mummy which means we will need plenty of Gauze and then Charlie will act out a scene from the movie for his parents.

Include a photo of your performance for your Drama Journal.

Music Class:

Charlie will research online for songs about Mummies which he will learn and perform for his parents. Charlie will write the lyrics to the song inside his Music Journal.

Art Class:

Monday through Thursday Charlie will be using Egyptian Mummies: Coloring Book for Kids & Kids at Heart (Hands-On Art History) in his Art Class to create Mummies free hand in his Art Journal.

Friday:

Charlie will collect all the information he collected on Mummies to create a college of Mummies and facts he learned about them using different styles of art and supplies.

Include a description of your art work and a picture for your Art Journal.

PE:

When your dressed up like the Mummy for your Drama Class practice walking like a Mummy around the neighborhood and dance like a Mummy.

Take a photo of your performance for your PE Journal and include a description of your performance.

Cooking Class:

Look up what century Mummies was most famous for and create a dish that people would have eaten back then.

Or make sandwiches and cookies in the shape of Mummies.

Write the recipe inside your Cooking Journal and include a photo as these dishes will be turned into a cookbook at the end of the year.
