For our family each morning when I get up to Homeschool Charlie, I tell myself and Charlie every day is we need to hang in there and not to give up because there are days when I want to throw in the towel and send Charlie back to school. Or the truth is he gets upset with me and he want’s to return to school because he doesn’t like what I am teaching or what I expect him to do. We take a break and talk about our feelings and resume schooling the next day.
I would like to let you know it’s okay to have these feelings and to begin to homeschool and quit if it isn’t the right fit for your family. Or you can homeschool for a month, week or year and decide it isn’t right and the children can return to public school. There is no right or wrong answer. Just listen to your heart and do what is right not only for your children but for our sanity as well.
Just remember that you can teach your children to read and add and that when they are with you, they will be learning through the things you do. Homeschooling is hard, and yes, it is scary, but your children learn from the world around them, and they don’t have to feel pressured to determine what someone else expects them to.
There will be things you miss when teaching your students or that you do not feel like teaching and that is fine because your child will still grow to be a productive child and can pick those items up along the way. Not only that as your teaching your children you will be learning right along with them.
Now, I have a tip for you most people may not realize you can homeschool your children all the way through College of this is something your family feels like doing. For our family I know I can get Charlie through 5th Grade, and yes, I might be able to do some middle school, but since I am not sure about that, I believe we will return Charlie to school in 6th grade. If it is God’s will.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
