With the upcoming Election around the corner I wanted to share a new children’s book which is also in our Back to School Gift Guide: Grace For President by Kelly DiPucchio (Author), LeUyen Pham (Illustrator). I received a copy of this picture book in exchange for this review. Inside this post is my affiliate links. I wish you could see the cute little girl on the cover of Grace For President and yes, she is Grace. Look at all the children who are so happy for her. I love the Stars & Stripes curtains. This is a New York Times best Seller book.
Inside the book is pictures of past presidents including JF Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln. If Charlie was still Homeschooling we could have studied in our Presidents lessons. I liked how the teacher reminded the children’ we’ve never had a women president.
Grace decides she will be the first. To begin her carer Grace starts off with the school’s mock election. The man she is running against claims to be the best man for the job and he has captured all the men’s vote. Grace decides she is the best person for the job.
Grace was worried because her opponent was Thomas Cobb and he was the Spelling Bee Champion, he also always won in the Science Fair and he was Captain of the Soccer Team becoming President wasn’t going to be easy after all.
The Teacher put all 50 States in a hat and each child choose a State and each State was assigned a number of electoral votes which was a learning lesson for Charlie. Then the teachers lets them know there was 538 votes total and to win they would need 270 electoral votes.
Next Grace came up with a Campaign Slogan. next they each made up a list of campaign promises they would do. Followed by buttons to wear and posters to hang. Each week they meet with there constituents another teaching moment for my family.
Polls were taking and people were choosing who they would vote for. Grace made lots of Speeches and handed out free Cupcakes and no, Charlie and I didn’t get a free Cupcake did you? Next was rallies. Thomas figured out the boys had more votes than the girls. Aww oh, that doesn’t sound fair does it?
Instead of campaigning Thomas worked on school projects. Grace fulfilled the promises she made. In November the school held a special Election Day assembly. The votes came in.
Thomas was afraid when Grace looked at the scoreboard. Only one State remained Wyoming. Before you ask who won I am not going to tell you because I think you should pick up a copy of Grace For President if you want to know and you should share the book with your friends and family.
About the book:
A fresh, fun, and “thought-provoking” New York Times bestseller about the American electoral college and why every vote counts from bestselling and award-winning duo Kelly DiPucchio and LeUyen Pham.
“Where are the girls?”
When Grace’s teacher reveals that the United States has never had a female president, Grace decides she wants to be the nation’s first and immediately jumpstarts her political career by running in her school’s mock election! The race is tougher than she expected: her popular opponent declares that he’s the “best man for the job” and seems to have captured the votes of all of the class’s boys. But Grace is more determined than ever. Even if she can’t be the best man for the job, she can certainly try to be the best person!
This timely story not only gives readers a fun introduction to the American electoral system but also teaches the value of hard work, courage, independent thought — and offers an inspiring example of how to choose our leaders.
