Food Holidays: October 15th, 2021: National Mushroom Day

The Mommies Reviews

Welcome back to our series sharing Food Holidays: October 15th, 2021: National Mushroom Day. Charlie and I don’t care for Mushrooms but David loves Fried Mushrooms. In our Cooking Class for Homeschool I was thinking Charlie could make Fried Mushrooms for his dad.

National Mushroom Day

National Mushroom Day is celebrated on October 15. Mushrooms are fleshy fruiting bodies of several species of Fungi. Some Mushrooms are edible and these can be used in cooking. Mushrooms are valued by Vegetarians due to their high nutritional value.

Did you know there are different kinds of Edible Mushrooms either cultivated or harvested wild. Mushroom hunting is popular in some Countries, but Mushroom hunting might not be completely safe. First of all, some Edible Mushrooms can be confused with Toxic Mushrooms. Secondly, Mushrooms are like a sponge, they easily absorb harmful substances from Soil and Air.

That is why most people prefer to buy commercially cultivated Mushrooms in Grocery Stores. The most common cultivated Edible Mushroom is Agaricus Bisporus. There is also the Common Mushroom, White Mushroom, Button Mushroom, Table Mushroom, and Champignon Mushroom.

Mushrooms are notable for their high nutritional value. Did you know Mushrooms are sometimes considered the “meat” of the Vegetable world due to the high protein content? Mushrooms are not Vegetables. Mushrooms also contain B Vitamins, Vitamin C, Potassium, Phosphorus, Calcium, Sodium, and Zinc. Mushrooms are able to produce vitamin D when exposed to Sunlight.

National Red Wine Day

Its always a good time for Red Wine, especially on August 28th, which is National Red Wine Day. Today, we throw out all those stuffy rules about how and when to drink Red Wine the Nectar from the Gods. Grab your coolest glass and savor the taste of your favorite Red Wine.

Did you know Red Wines including Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon don’t always have to rest at a temperature of between 65-70 degrees before you can enjoy a glass. There are some experts who say it’s perfectly acceptable to refrigerate Red Wines and drink a glass cold during the hot Weather.

Ignore the Wine snobs, and make your choice and commit to drinking responsibly. Hoist your glass in a toast to National Red Wine Day.

National Red Wine Day Activities

  1. In honor of National Red Wine Day restaurants offer a specials on, Red Wine! Instead of going for a single, heavy meal, consider a Tapas Crawl. Where small plates are shareable and won’t make you drowsy. Red Wine contains Melatonin, so you might have to fight the urge to catch nap.
  2. There are too many types of Sangria for you to make by yourself. Instead invite your friends to bring over their favorite Sangria recipe then you can taste and compare the different recipes. Have everyone suggest a flavor. Then settle on a recipe that combines the best of each idea.
  3. Create a meal using Red Wine. Remember you don’t have to look very hard to find recipes for Wine-based appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

3 Wine Facts To Share With Your Friends

  1. Did you know Oenophobia is the Scientific term used to describe people with a fear of Wine.
  2. Wine tasting is all about expectations and even Oenology students have trouble discerning Red Wine from White Wine in blind studies.
  3. Did you know Wine has “legs”? Which doesn’t mean what you think. Rather than showing quality, “legs” show that a Wine has high Alcohol content.

Why PEOPLE Love National Red Wine Day

  1. Did you know Red Wine can keep us healthy? A five-ounce glass of Wine is Fat-free, Cholesterol-free, and only has 100 calories. Other than helping to keep you slim and trim, Red Wine keeps your Brain sharp. Resveratrol is in the skin of Red Grapes and it’s the mortal enemy of Beta-amyloid. A protein that’s a contributing factor to Alzheimer’s. A glass of Wine here or there can slow down the formation. Looks like they weren’t kidding when they said “Let’s drink to your health.”
  2. Sangria is a refreshing way to cool off in the Summer and it’s a great way to expand your taste buds’ horizons. There’s literally no end to the variety, with recipes containing Bitters or Italian Amaro Liqueurs. Being that it’s National Red Wine Day, you probably want to stick to Red Wine-Based Sangria.
  3. Did you know Red Wine makes food taste better. Drinking a glass of Red Wine isn’t the only way to celebrate. Wine not only pairs well with food but it’s a key ingredient in recipes. There are standard dishes like Spaghetti Bolognese that has Red Wine Infused in the Sauce. If you’re a more more adventurous foodie, try Cabernet Apple Slaw.
