Welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: November, 2021: National Georgia Pecan Month. Have you ever had a Georgia Pecan? Before you ask me as much as I love Pecans I am not sure I’ve had a Georgia Pecan but I would like to have some for a snack. How about you?
November is National Georgia Pecan Month and Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black wants to remind everyone of the State Nut.
“Georgia is the Nation’s leading Pecan producing state,” Black said. “Albany and Dougherty Counties are known as the ‘Pecan Capital of the World’ because of the high number of Pecan Trees.”
Pecans have been in the spotlight recently because of their Antioxidant; protecting the body from Cancer, Heart Disease and other Diseases. Pecans are a good source of Protein. Pecans are loaded with essential Vitamins and Minerals, including Iron, Calcium and B Vitamins. Pecans are rich in Potassium and Phosphorus. Pecans also provide Fiber. Pecans have been found to help Lower Cholesterol and contain only a trace of Sodium.
During the month of November and year-round, Black encourages consumers to incorporate Georgia Pecans into their diet: “Did you know peak harvest season for Pecans started in September and continues through November, but consumers can find Georgia Pecans year-round. Pecans are the All-Season Nut. Pecans are great right now for the Holidays as the finishing touch on recipes including Candied Sweet Potatoes.”
The Georgia Pecan Commission unveiled its brand new AntioxiNUT campaign in September.
