Good morning, welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: May 1st. Its Chocolate Parfait Day. I have a question for you. Have you even had Kentucky Fried Chicken?
Do you remember going into there store as a child and picking out a Dessert? Those were Chocolate and Vanilla Parfaits. I sure do miss them. I should make one for Charlie and David this evening.
National Chocolate Parfait Day
May 1st would have been a perfect day for a Parfait. With mine and Charlie’s throats hurting but that wasn’t to be. Although, David did bring me a Chocolate Shake home.
Did you know Parfait is a French dessert developed in 1894? The dessert is made with sugar syrup, eggs and cream. However it evolved to a custard-base ice cream flavored with fruit puree.
Do you prefer a Chocolate Parfait of Fruit? David likes Fruit but Charlie and I both like Chocolate and we don’t care for Fruit at all. I know Fruit is good for us but I just don’t like it. As for Charlie there is a few things he will eat but not a lot.
This dessert was whipped to achieve an airy and delicate texture. When the French Parfait came to the USA, it was changed. American Parfait is Ice cream and syrup layered in a special glass and topped with whipped cream and don’t forget the Cherry.
Chocolate Parfait, that we honor today, usually involves Chocolate Mousse Pudding layered with whipped cream, cookie crumbs, fruit or anything else that is delicious and goes well with chocolate.
Did you know a Chocolate parfait also can have a gelatin or yogurt base, and the rest of the dessert is built from there. I wonder what one with Gelatin would taste like.
I would like to let you know there are hundreds of Parfait recipes if your adventurous you could even make your own up. Parfaits are perfect for breakfast or dessert.
Five facts about Chocolate:
- Dark chocolate has more antioxidants than Green Tea and just as many as Blueberries. Do you like Dark Chocolate? Once again Charlie and I don’t care for it. But David will eat it once in a while.
- White Chocolate really isn’t Chocolate. It’s made from Cocoa Butter, the substance you get by pressing Cocoa Beans. Cocoa Butter is absent of the Cocoa solids used to make Chocolate.
Recipe:
- 1 (1.4-oz.) package fat-free, sugar-free chocolate instant pudding mix
- 2 cups 1% low-fat milk
- ½ cup light sour cream
- 1 (8-oz.) container fat-free frozen whipped topping, thawed and divided
- ¾ cup chocolate graham cracker crumbs (4 cracker sheets)
- 1 tablespoon freshly grated chocolate
Step 1 Whisk together first 3 ingredients in a bowl until blended and smooth. Fold in 1 1/2 cups whipped topping.Step 2 Spoon 1 Tbsp. crumbs into each of 6 (4-oz.) glasses, and top with 1/3 cup pudding mixture. Repeat layers with remaining crumbs and pudding mixture. Top each parfait evenly with remaining whipped topping and grated chocolate. Cover and chill at least 1 hour.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
