Good morning, how are you? I wanted to share Food Holidays: February 21st, 2022. Today is National Sticky Bun Day and I have a fun fact for you this morning. I cannot honestly say my family has had a Sticky Bun nor do I know what they are for sure. How about you. Have you had a Sticky Bun and if so, did you like it or not?

I have a question for you this morning. What goes better with Coffee than something sweet, nutty and oozing with Caramel? A Sticky Bun and on February 21st we celebrate National Sticky Bun Day! This delightful confection, a Philadelphia specialty originally known as “Schnecken” are thought to have been brought to the United States by German settlers in the 18th Century. Sticky Buns are often served for breakfast and are also sometimes known as Cinnamon Rolls or Monkey Bread.

Five facts about sticky buns:

  1. Sticky buns have also been known as Cinnamon Rolls or Monkey Bread. 
  2. A Sticky Bun should always be made of Yeast dough. 
  3. Ancient Egyptians were the first people to add Honey and Nuts to their bread. 
  4. In the UK and Canada, Sticky Buns are known as “Chelsea Buns” and contain Raisins! 
  5. German settlers in Pennsylvania created the modern-day sticky bun.

NATIONAL STICKY BUN DAY ACTIVITIES

  1. Imagine filling your kitchen with the smell of Spices and Caramel baking in the oven from preparing Sticky Buns. You can find videos to help you with technique and the recipe choices are endless.
  2. Sticky Buns are often a staple at neighborhood Bakeries or Brunch Spots.  Make it a ritual of checking out all the different options in your City until you find the best Sticky Bun of your dreams.
  3. Sticky buns can be made in a variety of shapes and sizes.  You could create a giant Sticky Roll that can be sliced like a Cake. Just roll the dough into balls and pile them into a cake pan for Monkey Bread or stack each slice together into a bread pan to create a pull apart loaf.  Don’t forget Sticky Buns aren’t only for breakfast.  

WHY PEOPLE LOVE NATIONAL STICKY BUN DAY

  1. The smell of a Sticky Bun makes you feel warm and cozy. Whether the Sticky Buns are baking in your oven, or the smell catches you at your local mall.  As you slowly unroll the Doughy goodness, the Sugar and Spices send you to a place of happiness and comfort few other foods can capture.
  2. Sticky Buns are fairly easy to make. There are virtually no rules as to what you can fill or top Sticky Buns with.  Warm Spices like Cinnamon, Cloves, or even Cardamom are all excellent choices, but you can experiment with other fillings including Apple or Chocolate.  
  3. It’s hard to imagine someone not being in love with the Sticky Bun.  Most people have wonderful childhood memories of popping open a package of store-bought Dough. Waiting for the baking to be done and carefully topping each bun with sticky frosting.
