In Charlie’s Homeschool Cooking Class I am going to have Charlie research recipes for Trail Mix then come up with his own recipe to make Trail Mix for our snack as we watch movies this evening. Most people eat Trail Mix without thinking about it but Trail Mix keeps us happy throughout the day. Every year on August 31st, National Trail Mix Day honors this healthy snack created for snacking on hikes in the great outdoors.

Do you know what makes Trail Mix so special? Not only is Trail Mix a nutritious combination of Granola, Nuts, dried Fruit, and sometimes Chocolate, but trail Mix is also lightweight, easy to store, and provides a quick energy boost and sustained energy.

Go to your local Supermarket to purchase the ingredients, mix together, and get to eating Trail Mix.

Buy some
We all love our snacks, especially Trail Mix. Purchase a big bag to share of Trail Mix at the office, with your favorite hiking crew, or loved ones.

Take Trail Mix on a hike
Plan your hike or mountain bike ride, and work up an appetite, then enjoy Trail Mix. Bring enough Trail Mix to share with your friends or folks you meet in your travels.

Sometimes, when we go out to enjoy the beautiful outdoors, we want everything to be easy. We crave the taste of the familiar and nothing’s more familiar, at least to Americans, than Trail Mix while backpacking in America’s National Parks.

While some people love to sit down, take their time and leisurely enjoy a snack; other folks like to eat their snacks on-the-run. For those people, Trail Mix is an ideal munch. Trail Mix has a long shelf life and its an uncomplicated snack

Here are today’s five thing to know about Trail Mix:

  1. Trail Mix is a combination of dried Fruit, Grains, Nuts, and sometimes Chocolate, developed as a snack food to be taken along on outdoor hikes.
  2. Trail Mix is considered an ideal snack food for hikes, because Trail Mix is tasty, lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious snack, providing a quick boost from the carbohydrates in the dried Fruit or Granola, and sustained energy from the mono- and polyunsaturated fats in Nuts.
  3. Many claim that Trail Mix was first invented in 1968 by two California surfers who blended Peanuts and Raisins together for an energy snack.
  4. Trail Mix is also mentioned in Jack Kerouac’s 1958 novel The Dharma Bums as the two main characters describe their planned meals in their preparation for a hiking trip.
  5. The recipe for Trail Mix is most likely European in origin, where it has been known as a snack under various names  in various Countries since the 17th Century.
