Welcome to today’s post in our series Food Holidays: April 22nd, 2022. Did you know today is National Jellybean Day? As a kid I remember my grandparents having candy jars full of Jellybeans in their living room. But if you wanted Red or Black you wouldn’t find them because these were their favorites and the ones, they always ate leaving all the other flavors.

Five things to know about Jellybean

  1. Jellybeans were President Reagan’s favorite candy. Ronald Reagan used Jellybeans to help him quit smoking when he was the governor of California.
  2. Each year in the U.S, there are 16 billion Jellybeans manufactured just for Easter.  his is enough to circle the Earth more than 3 times if the Jellybeans were laid end to end.
  3. Jellybeans is associated with Easter because of its egg-like shape.
  4. In the early 20th Century, a “jelly-bean” was slang for a man of style and no substance.
  5. Jellybeans were the first candy to be sold by weight rather than by piece.

Fun Fact:

The first Jellybean was created by an unknown American candy maker in the 1800s. An 1861 advertisement recommended sending Jellybeans to soldiers fighting in the Civil War.

The original eight flavors of Jelly Belly Jellybeans were introduced in 1976. Including Very Cherry, Root Beer, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Lemon, Licorice and Grape.

Jelly Belly Beans were the first Jellybeans in outer space when President Reagan sent Jellybeans on the 1983 flight of the space shuttle Challenger.

If you are like me then were all for cutting back on Sugar. Let’s start tomorrow. It’s National Jellybean Day, and a lot of us will still have plenty of Easter candy on hand.
