Food Holidays: April 21st, 2021

Good morning, welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: April 21st, 2021 National Strawberries and Cream Day. Have you had Strawberries and Cream?

Because I haven’t and neither had Charlie. As for David I don’t know if he has had Strawberries and Cream or not. But I should make this for David and Charlie because I know they would like having Strawberries and Cream a lot.

National Strawberries and Cream Day

Today is National Strawberries and Cream Day! The simple combination of fresh sliced strawberries and homemade whipped cream has been a popular dish for centuries. In fact, in medieval England it was customary for newlyweds to enjoy strawberries and soured cream for their wedding breakfast.

The strawberry is the first fruit to ripen every spring and each refreshing bite contains high levels of Vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, and potassium. If you’re feeling experimental, there are many interesting variations on the classic strawberries and cream recipe. Try flavoring your whipped cream with amaretto liqueur or substituting a combination of fat-free sour cream and brown sugar instead. For a more elaborate dessert, put together a trifle with alternating layers of fruit, cream, and a sweet pastry such as ladyfinger cookies. For more ideas, check out these recipes for stuffed strawberries.

To celebrate National Strawberries and Cream Day, pick up some fresh strawberries and make a delicious snack of strawberries and cream at home!

Here are today’s five food finds about Strawberries:

  • Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside.
  • The ancient Romans believed that strawberries alleviated symptoms of melancholy, fainting, all inflammations, fevers, throat infections, kidney stones, bad breath, attacks of gout, and diseases of the blood, liver and spleen.
  • Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in the spring.
  • Over 53 percent of seven to nine-year-olds picked strawberries as their favorite fruit.
