Welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: April 14th, 2022. Did you know today is National Buttermilk Biscuit Day? I don’t know about you but I’ve been wanting warme Bisucits with Jelly and Butter. While my mom would want Bear Rabbit Syrup and Butter on her Biscuits.

With Charlie homeschooling this year I have Charlie taking a home econimics class and he is learning to cook. If everyone thing wasn’t packed for the move Charlie and I would practice making Buttermilk Biscuits but that is out of the question at the moment.

For David and I there is nothing quite like a flaky, Buttermilk Biscuit with Jelly and Butter for me and for David Biscuits and Gravy to send our taste buds into overdrive. What better way to celebrate a long-standing Southern tradition than by celebrating National Buttermilk Biscuit Day on May 14th? These Biscuits emerged in the pre-Civil War era as an inexpensive addition to meals. When people realized these Bread products absorbed the Gravy on their plates better than Light Bread, Biscuits soared in popularity. The version of Biscuits that we all know and love the Buttermilk Biscuit was born. From celebrating at your favorite restaurant to whipping up a batch of Buttermilk Biscuitsat home, there are lots of ways one can pay celebrate this Southern staple.

NATIONAL BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY ACTIVITIES

  1. Rule #1: You can never have too many Biscuits. In preparation for the holiday, scope out the local restaurant scene a few days beforehand to discover what kind of deals you can find on Biscuits. Then, on May 14th, put your game face on and head over to your local Cracker Barrel to enjoy home-style cooking, complete with mouthwatering buttermilk Biscuits and Gravy. Although, I always ask them for Apple Butter and you should to. Then for dessert, mosey on over to Red Lobster to scarf down Cheddar Biscuits. Popeyes, Bojangles’, and Church’s Chicken also have Biscuits. Remember, the earlier you start , the more ground you’ll cover.
  2. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that beats homemade Buttermilk Biscuits. If you aren’t sure where to start, there are hundreds of recipes on the Internet. If you’re feeling adventurous, make up your own recipe! We’ll give you a hint: you’ll need Buttermilk.
  3. As wonderful as Buttermilk Biscuits might be on their own, Buttermilk Biscuits can often be made better when combined with other ingredients. From Casseroles to Cinnamon Rolls, there are heaps of unique dishes that can be made using Buttermilk Biscuits as a base.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL BUTTERMILK BISCUIT DAY

  1. One of the greatest things about Buttermilk Biscuit is its versatility. Whether you enjoy Biscuits immersed in Gravy or prefer to order Biscuits with the traditional brunch fare, Buttermilk Biscuits can be served as an accompinement for any meal. Feeling extra hungry when lunch rolls around? Skip the line at your dinner and pop a couple of Biscuits in the microwave.
  2. From Molasses to Fruit-flavored Jellies, there isn’t much you can’t put on a Buttermilk Biscuit. Throw a little Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on top and you’ve got yourself a Breakfast Sandwich. You can even slather Buttermilk Biscuits in Peanut Butter. Use National Buttermilk Biscuit Day as an excuse to experiment with your favorite condiments.
  3. .Buttermilk Biscuits are a universal comfort food, no matter which Geographical region you grew up in. Of course, if you were raised in a good ol’ Southern home, you probably have a appreciation for Buttermilk Biscuits. Regardless, what’s not to love? There’s just something about biting into a Buttery Biscuit that is therapeutic.
