Barry X Ball: Remaking Sculpture

What: Barry X Ball reimagines and transforms historical artworks thought the combination of 3D-scanning technology, computer-aided modeling software, stone-cutting technology and centuries-old craft techniques requiring thousands of hours of detailed handwork. He has adapted innovative technologies and traditional techniques to make carefully honed sculptures in semi-precious stones—rarely used due to their difficulty to carve and lack of consistency—that push the physical and conceptual boundaries of sculpture.

A family sketches during Free First Saturday

What: Look, learn and love your time at the Nasher every first Saturday of the month. Bring the whole crew to create, discover and make new memories together. Each month features a rotating schedule of things to see and do.

Details: FREE admission all day. Make art with guest artists Jessica Trevizo and Liz Trosper, and sketch in the garden with a Nasher Educator. Enjoy the sounds of the Boyd Orchestra Ambassadors. Try a tamale from Casa Masa. Use your observation skills to investigate art in the galleries. Get creative with a project from The Writer’s Garret. Meet up with a Nasher Educator to learn about what’s on view.   

Workshop: The X Factor

What: Learn about the work of artist Barry X Ball, who uses 3D scanning technology to reimagine iconic works of art. Then, have a ball putting your own spin on an artwork from the Nasher Collection.

Community BBQ with Nasher Prize Laureate Michael Rakowitz 

What: Join artist Michael Rakowitz, the 2020 Nasher Prize Laurate, as he cooks traditional Iraqi dishes and Texas BBQ at this lunchtime celebration, complete with live music and dancing. 
When: Saturday, February 8, 2020, 11a.m.- 2 p.m.

Where: F.A.R.M (Farmer’s Assisting Return Military) near the Dallas Farmer’s Market/ 700 S. Good Latimer Expressway, Dallas, TX 75226

Details: Free with registration. Free parking is available. For over two decades, Rakowitz’s sculpture has considered his heritage as an American artist of Iraqi Jewish descent and has confronted the complex legacies of centuries of conflict in the Middle East. One way he does this is by fostering community throughout the shared experience of a meal with people of various backgrounds. For this event, Rakowitz will work with help from Break Bread Break Boarders, a Dallas-based catering company which economically empowers refugee women by employing them as cooks.

Homeschool Workshop: Tech Talk

What: Learn how artists have explored new technologies to create sculpture. In the studio, design your own sculpture inspired by the technology that shapes your life. 
When: Friday, February 14, 2020, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Details: This workshop is designed for children ages 5-12. $5 per-person deposit. Advance registration required. Homeschool workshops at the Nasher encourage critical thinking and creativity as parents and children learn together.

Soundings: New Music at the Nasher: Travis Laplante

What: Second Soundings concert of the 2020 season with musician in residence, Travis Laplante 
When: Thursday, February 20, 2020, 7:30 p.m.- 10:30 p.m.

Details: Saxophonist, composer, qigong practitioner and Renaissance man, Travis Laplante, is an astonishing technician, extending possibilities of the tenor saxophone into new territories that encompass the avant-garde, contemporary jazz and classical, world music, and beyond. ’til Midnight at the Nasher

Museum guests enjoy live music and film screenings in the Nasher Garden.

What: Enjoy FREE admission from 6 p.m. until midnight and FREE concerts at the Nasher Sculpture Center. At each event, a variety of national and regional music talent perform. Guests can attend the Nasher for FREE taking in the museum’s renowned collection of modern and contemporary art as well as contemporary exhibitions by some of the most important artists working today.

The Cedars Union Members Tour

What: Nasher Members are invited to a cocktail hour and a special behind-the-scenes look at the Cedars Union, an innovative local art incubator hosting micro-studios, common workspace, and equipment to help emerging artists expand their practice. The tour will be guided by Matthew Bowdon, Co-Founder and Executive Director, with member artists in attendance to host studio visits, discuss art making, and reveal new work.
