February 21 National Sticky Bun Day #nationalstickybunday

The Mommies Reviews

Today is a holiday that makes me scratch my head because its National Sticky Bun Day #nationalstickybunday. My question is what is the difference between a Sticky Roll and a Cinnamon Roll? The more I think about this Holiday the more I wonder if I’ve had a Sticky Roll or not. Which leads me back to Charlie’s Homeschool Cooking Class. I think Charlie will prepare Cinnamon Rolls and Sticky Buns then we can try each and vote on which one we like the best. Would you like to join us? I will provide Milk for us to drink.

NATIONAL STICKY BUN DAY

National Sticky Bun Day falls on February 21st and the Holiday recognizes a Pastry that comes rolled up and dripping with a sweet, Sugary topping. Sticky Buns are perfect with a hot cup of Coffee in the morning or as an after-dinner sweet! Although, I believe I will have a glass of Milk although I’ve been none to have Coffee and even Iced tea at times with Cinnamon Rolls. I wonder how that would work with a Sticky Bun?

Sticky Buns are none as “Schnecken” meaning Snail, because the Sticky Bun is rolled into a sweet spiral resembling its German name. Sticky Buns are till considered to be a Pennsylvania specialty, many believed the Sticky Bun’s origin in the United States began in the 19th Century. German settlers brought their baking traditions with them when they began settling in and around Philadelphia.

Sticky Buns are often served for breakfast or as a dessert. Sticky Buns consist of rolled pieces of leavened dough. Most Sticky Buns contain Brown Sugar and sometimes Cinnamon. Before the dough is placed in the pan, the pan is lined with sticky sweet ingredients including Maple Syrup, Honey, Nuts, Sugar, and Butter. When the Sticky Buns are finished baking, the baker flips the pan upside-down so the sticky bottom becomes the topping.

Sticky Buns famous cousins are the Cinnamon Roll, Caramel Roll and Monkey Bread.  If you are craving Sticky Buns try making some of your own or you can also stop by your local Bakery or grocery story and pick up their freshly baked Sticky Buns. Don’t forget Tea, Coffee, or Hot Cocoa to serve with the Sticky Buns but I will have Milk. How about you?

Servings: 12 Yield: 24 sticky buns

Ingredients

  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 5 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup white sugar, divided
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ⅔ cup chopped pecans
  • ⅓ cup raisins

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
  2. Add 2 1/2 cups flour, buttermilk, eggs, 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/4 cup softened butter, baking powder, and salt to yeast mixture; stir until well combined. Stir in remaining 3 cups flour, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Dough should remain soft and slightly sticky. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  3. Divide dough in half, then roll each half into a 12×7-inch rectangle. Spread each rectangle with 1 tablespoon softened butter, then sprinkle with 1/4 cup white sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Roll up halves, beginning at a wide side; pinch seams to seal well. Cut each roll into 12 equal slices.
  4. Coat 2 (9-inch) round cake pans, each with 1/4 cup melted butter, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 of the pecans, and 1/2 of the raisins. Arrange 12 dough slices in each prepared pan, leaving a small space between slices. Cover and let rise until doubled, 30 to 60 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  6. Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes. Invert the pans onto serving plates, lift up the pans to release sticky buns, and serve hot.
