Extraordinary Women With Cameras

The Mommies Reviews

This is a review for a new book called Extraordinary Women With Cameras written by Darcy Reed and Illustrated By Canessa Perez from Rocky Nook I received a copy in exchange for this review.

I plan on having Charlie take a Photography Class as a extra curriculum class. To prepare Charlie for his photography class I was excited to sit down with Charlie to read Extraordinary Women With Cameras in our Homeschool Reading Class.

Charlie and I will also be studying each of the ladies inside the book and look up the photo’s they’ve taken for our Art Class. Which Charlie can practice drawing. Not only that we can look up which States the ladies come from and find out what foods the States are for which Charlie can prepare in his Homeschool Cooking Class.

I even found one of my hero’s Annie Leibovitz in the book allowing me to discuss what I liked about her and who’s photos she had taken and which magazine she worked with. Which impressed both Charlie and David. Charlie and David even want to see if they can purchase the Rolling Stone Magazine to use in school this year.

I love the photographs they included in the book so we could see who they were talking about. They even included a list of other women Charlie and I can look up and study inside our Homeschool leading to many new lessons not only in reading but art.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out Extraordinary Women With Cameras I hope you do soon and this book should be in every library and in every classroom not only for Elementary Students but Middle School students as well.

About:

Explore 35 of the most groundbreaking, creative female photographers in history and modern times!

Ever since photography was invented almost 200 years ago, women have broken barriers and influenced the art form. Now, this first-ever children’s book about women photographers tells the stories of 35 of the most talented historical and contemporary shutterbugs.

Filled with colorful illustrations, this book includes stories about Dorothea Lange’s haunting portraits of American history, Margaret Bourke-White’s bravery as the first female war correspondent in WWII, Florestine Perrault Collins’ influential images depicting Black life in the 1920s, and many more. Including explanations of key photography terms, photo project ideas, and suggestions for other women photographers to study, this charming book will inspire children to pick up a camera and make their own incredible photographs.

“It isn’t easy to sum a life up in a few words, especially an extraordinary life, one whose arc reached from nowhere to everywhere. But Reed does an admirable job. These don’t read like book reports. They read like sparkling little jewels that make you want to try them on.”
