Do you struggle to keep your family entertained, especially during the school holidays? Well fortunately, there are plenty of options that are both fun and affordable. Check out these day trip ideas to keep your kids entertained all summer long!

Matt Jones, CEO of WonderDays, shares some top day trips guaranteed to delight your kids.

Zoo Visits

Why not introduce your kids to the beauty and diversity of nature? By visiting zoos, they can see rare and exotic animals up close. Matt says, ‘At London Zoo, younger children can visit the Animal Adventure play area and pet the pygmy goats. Older kids will enjoy the Junior Keeper animal experience, where you step into the boots of a zookeeper.’

If your family loves outdoor activities, you could also check out Bristol Zoo. It features the Leap of Faith, Barefoot Trail, Congo Bongo, and Fun Fort.

Museums

These all-weather locations are ideal if your family enjoys art, history, science, and more. One popular example is the Museum of Making in Derby, which covers 300 years of local history. There are trails, crafts, and family workshops covering forging skills, the art of throwing pots, and carnival design.

If your kids enjoy science at school, check out the interactive activities featured at the London Science Museum. You can visit the IMAX Ronson Theatre, play futuristic video games, and learn about music, flight, space, and more through their interactional exhibits.

Safari Parks

If you can’t afford to visit Africa, you still have options closer to home! Matt says, ‘Safari parks are an ideal way for active kids to burn off steam and engage in outdoor activities.’

At Knepp Wildland Safaris at Horsham, your family can enjoy Tamworth pigs, Exmoor ponies, and red and fallow deer. You can also discover herds of Old English longhorn cattle and purple emperor butterflies. At Woburn Safari Park, there’s the Mammoth Play Ark, the Giraffe Trail High Ropes, and dragon and swan boats.

Matt’s Day Trip Planning Tips

Here are some practical suggestions from Matt to make your day trip a success:

  • Always check admission fees and opening hours
  • Review the weather forecast beforehand and dress accordingly
  • Bring snacks, drinks, and sun protection
  • Bring kid’s entertainment for the journey
  • Research the route, traffic, and travel time
  • Bring a first-aid kit, just incase

Matt says, ‘For days out, include the whole family when making plans. This way, there’ll be something for everyone, and you’ll all have a great time.’
