Parenting Trend 1: Worried Parents
These parents fret about the present and the future. They struggle with safety in public schools. They worry about the direction of the country politically and how it will affect their children. Other worries may include the environment, quality of education, bullying, neighborhood safety, sexual predators, and more. They may make many parenting decisions based on their worries.
Parenting Trend 2: Stress-free Parents
With concerns about the time spent on social media, attachment to devices, distractions due to chats and the immediacy of having cell phones, these parents limit or carefully screen access to television, devices, and radio. They insist on knowing all passwords and scrutinizing any sanctioned activity.
Parenting Trend 3: Podcast Parents
Podcasts have become a repository for information and entertainment on almost any topic. Parents with little time to socialize, read, or explore educational content, may rely on podcasts during long commutes or work breaks. They can find advice (and build community indirectly), find information on targeted topics, and be entertained. Podcasts are common for children as well, allowing them to pursue passion
topics.
Parenting Trend 4: Attention to the diverse learning styles and challenges (Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum) plus awareness of mental health risks
Previously, resources were difficult to find for children with learning problems. Now we recognize that there are a multitude of challenges that a child may face. Children’s problems or learning differences no longer need to be swept under the rug. Resource rooms are no longer a stigma in schools. Many parents talk openly about how they have faced and overcome learning challenges. Having more open communication about learning challenges (plus gender issues) normalizes what used to be something to hide. Identifying and obtaining early support for mental health issues should continue to grow in 2025.
Parenting Trend 5: Stress-free Parents
These parents return to simpler times by removing the family from all the pressures of living in today’s context. They may move to a remote area, homeschool by teaching practical life experiences, grow their own food, and work as a family unit for general living, including cooking, cleaning, yard work, etc. They also may have a focus on healthy living.
Parenting Trend 6: Advocate Parents
These parents add action to their concerns. They involve the entire family in discussions about issues of importance. The whole family may focus on reducing water usage, recycling, or endangered animals. They may attend protests on issues of concern, or take a leadership role in politics or the community.
Parenting Trend 6: Sharenting—or No
Many parents love to share stories and pictures of their children’s achievements. Whereas the sharing used to be limited to family and friends, it is now common for parents to share widely through social media, leading children to assume it is routine to be very public about one’s whereabouts or details (date of birth, home city, name of school, etc.). Concerns about oversharing may motivate parents to limit media exposure.
TRENDS THAT SHOULD EVOLVE IN 2025
- Focus on becoming a global citizen: understanding different cultures, empathy for others’ challenges, etc.
- Developing civility: the power of kindness, respecting others’ opinions, etc.
- Developing a curious child: not just a child who is imaginative, but one that is curious about the world, information, relationships.
