What is an Essential Oil? Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems,roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.
Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils.
Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.
In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits.
Modern scientific study and trends toward more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications.

#5 Organoleptic Testing – testing for quality of aroma, feel and appearance of an oil.
How to use the Oils? Apply topically – directly on the skin in the needed area, the bottom of the feet (these are the largest pores of the body. Oil travels quickly from the foot to the entire body), the spine, the mastoid bone (behind the ears), the back of the neck (below the base of the skull). CAUTION: NEVER put oil in your eyes, nose or ears. How? Massage in for a few moments to increase the blood flow for quicker oil movement. Use of a warm damp cloth over the area where the oil was applied helps to drive it faster and deeper. Also, Peppermint is an excellent driver when applied as the final layer.
Carrier Oils – use a carrier oil with “Hot” oils or when you need to spread a few drops over a larger area.
Fractionated coconut oil or olive oil is an excellent carrier oil. They do not diminish the effectiveness ofthe essential oil, they just tone down the heat on some and spread it further.
Aromatically – In hands; rub 1-2 drops of oil in your hands, cup them over your mouth and nose and inhale. Diffusers; there are many to choose from. The entire family can benefit at the same time. Some use water mist to diffuse the oils and others use atomizer technology that produces a micro-fine vapor that disperses them into the air directly from the essential oil bottle. Oils will kill bacteria in the room, enhance the mood and create a pleasant, aromatic atmosphere. Water; simple add a few drops into steaming water and breath the vapors into your lungs.
Internally – “Hot” oils need to be encapsulated if taken internally. Some oils are not designed to be taken internally, such as Deep Blue or Wintergreen. Capsules; put drops of oils into a veggie or gel and swallow with liquid. Take them soon after filling the capsule. Gargle/Swish/Pull; two to three dropswith a small amount of water may be gargled, swished or pulled through the teeth and swallowed.
Under the tongue; if not a hot oil, under the tongue is an excellent place for maximum absorption. Inthe throat; some oils can be use in the back of the throat to provide some quick relief of a sore throat.
