December 26th is National Candy Cane Day #NationalCandyCaneDay. I don’t know about you but I have Candy Canes left over from our Christmas Tree to snack on in the New Year. How about you? As families take time to rest after the Holidays I wanted to let you know Amazon sells a storybook about the Legend of the Candy Cane titled, “The Candy Makers Gift.”
My family will be adding to our Christmas Library and I thought you might want to check out the book as well. I also shared a Poem you can share with your families as well as use in your #Homeschool Classes along with a recipe to create Candy Canes in your home and at the bottom of the post is fun facts and activities for you and your family to do.
Christmas Candy Cane Poem about Jesus
Look at the Candy Cane
What do you see?
Stripes that are red
Like the blood shed for me
White is for my Savior
Who’s sinless and pure!
“J” is for Jesus My Lord, that’s for sure!
Turn it around
And a staff you will see
Jesus my shepherd
Was born for Me!
Recipe to make Candy Canes:
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon peppermint or spearmint extract
- 6 drops red or green food coloring
Directions
Working quickly, roll each strip into a 10-in. log. Cut each into two 5-in. lengths. Curve the top of each to form the handle of a cane. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
Grease two baking sheets with butter; set aside. In a large saucepan, bring the sugar, water, corn syrup and cream of tartar to a boil. Cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer reads 280° (soft-crack stage).
Remove from the heat; stir in extract and food coloring. Immediately pour onto prepared pans in eight 8-in. strips. Let stand just until cool enough to handle, about 1-2 minutes.
National Candy Cane Day is on December 26, and while that doesn’t mean it’ll keep us from munching on the sugary sticks as early as Thanksgiving, it does give us a chance to indulge as much as we can before New Year’s. With beginnings in 17th-century Germany, these sweet treats were curved to represent the shepherds’ crooks. They later made their way to the states in the mid-19th century. Now we see them everywhere, even on trees.
