As I was sitting here this morning I looked up the challenge for Day 22 Song of the Day Challenge: A Song That Moves You Forward. I scratched my head trying to figure out what song moves me forward.
Then I thought of King of the Road by Roger Miller which I have been playing in the morning when I am walking on my Treadmill. I chose this song because it reminds me of my dad.
I could feel him telling me to get up and do something about the weight I need to lose. I could hear my mom saying I wish I had a room of my own to rent.
“King of the Road” is a song written by country singer Roger Miller, who first recorded it in November 1964.[1] The lyrics tell of the day-to-day life of a vagabond hobo who, despite being poor (a “man of means by no means”), revels in his freedom, describing himself humorously and cynically as the “king of the road”. It was his fifth single for Smash Records.[2]

King of the Road
Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain’t got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin’ broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I’m a man of means by no means, king of the road.
Third boxcar, midnight train, destination, Bangor, Maine.
Old worn out clothes and shoes,
I don’t pay no union dues,
I smoke old stogies I have found short, but not too big around
I’m a man of means by no means, king of the road.
I know every engineer on every train
All of their children, and all of their names
And every handout in every town
And every lock that ain’t locked, when no one’s around I sing, trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain’t got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin’ broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I’m a man of means by no means, king of the road.
