Welcome to our series where we share Daily Bizarre, Unique Holidays – April, 17th. Check out the Holidays below and leave me a comment letting me know which one you would most like to celebrate and why.
I know David would appreciate this day and wouldn’t mind going to look at Bats. But I don’t think Charlie or I would enjoy going. Even though I have been to Carlsbad, New Mexico and saw Bats in person when I was in High School.
Let’s celebrate bats today!! No, were not going batty. We think Bats deserve a little respect. #HomeschoolTeachingMoment there as many varieties of bats. There is even Bats as small as your thumb. Counter to what horror movies lead us to believe, these night flyers won’t bother you, if you don’t bother them.
Did you know Bats can actually be your friend. They’re nocturnal flyers, emerging after dark, from caves, steeples, and the attics of old buildings. Bats use a form of radar to seek their favorite food Mosquitos and other night time insects. Gardeners certainly appreciate Bats and Bat Guano is among the best manures you can use, in your home garden. Not that I plan on finding out. How about you?
When we think about bats, we often think of Bats as Halloween Bats, which is a symbol of the Halloween holiday. Or at least I do think that. How about you?
This is how I was feeling yesterday and so was Charlie. Now, I have a question for you. Have you ever felt like this and if so how did you get over this feeling?
Blah, Blah, Blah Day just might be the blah-est day of the year. The intent of this day is to do all of the projects and things that people have been nagging you to do. Which might include quitting a habit, losing weight, or working on home projects. The “Honey Do” list or job jar is a top target for today. Although, David and Charlie said if they had a Honey-Do Jar they would hide it because I wouldn’t stop adding task to it. That would never finish all the task. Do you think that is true?
Herbalism is an important study and profession and Herbalist Day, is sometimes referred to as “Thank a Herbalist Day”, a celebration and awareness of the importance of herbs and herbalists in our lives.
According to the Herbal Academy, its a “celebration of the many teachers, peers and herbs that have guided us through our journey as a herbalist thus far”.
What is a herbalist: #HomeschoolTeachingMoment: An herbalist is someone who uses plants for healing. These practitioners are not medical doctors, though some practitioners are also referred to as medical herbalists.
Herbs unquestioningly play a very important part in our lives and there are many, many different Herbs, providing medicinal, culinary, cosmetic, and aromatic uses.
You can use herbs to flavor countless foods. When you think about food it would be pretty bland without herbs. Or at least my family thinks so. Do you feel this way as well?
Medicinally, Herbs are used extensively, to treat a wide range of ailments. They can be infused in Tea, or used in baths and topical solutions. Some herbs also offer an aromatic benefit.
Lavender comes to mind with its wonderful aroma. Herbs are an ingredient in many cosmetics and beauty products. Ornamental herbs are commonly used in fresh or dried arrangements. Herbs serve more than one of these uses.
Did you know Herbs are natural remedies for many ailments. Herbalists believe they’re better for you, than chemical medicines. Are herbs in actuality better or healthier for you? That is often the subject of much debate. Herbalists use their extensive knowledge of all the various herbs, to put them to good use for good health.
We encourage you to do two things today: First, if you know a Herbalist, thank them for all that they do. Secondly, spend some time learning more about herbs. In #Homeschool you can show how Herbs can be used to make your life a better one. You might even find yourself wanting to become a Herbalist.
Happy Herbalist Day!

Husband Appreciation Day – third Saturday in April
If your home is like mine our husbands are the ones who take care of everyone but are the least appreciated. When husbands should be thanked everyday and not just one or two times a year.
Even though David is working today and were not sure what time he will get off Charlie is going to back a Cheesecake for David while I create his favorite meal.
The objective of Husband Appreciation Day is for wives to show appreciation to husbands in a marriage with no children. In a marriage with children, there is Father’s Day , a day recognizing the value of husbands with kids. Its only fitting that there be a special day, today, to recognize and show appreciation to childless husbands. Which as you know David isn’t its still nice to recognize them for all they do and today is the perfect day to do that.
It should be very easy to show appreciation to your husband, for who he is, and for the many great things he does. You know your husband well, and his likes and dislikes.
Start by telling your husband he is appreciated. Now I know this might go to his head but for today its okay. As your talking to him don’t forget to give him a few examples why he is appreciated.
Next, select a couple of things your husband likes or likes to do, and make it happen. You can give him a gift today, which isn’t a requirement but would be nice.
While this day was originally intended to honor husbands in a childless marriage, we encourage all wives to show appreciation for their husbands on this day, too. After all, showing your appreciation today and everyday is a great way to have a great marriage.
Now, ladies, before you ask me. Yes, you will get your day, too. It’s in September……. Wife Appreciation Day
International Haiku Poetry Day
In Homeschooling this year Charlie should be learning #Poetry. With today being International Haiku Poetry Day. Its the perfect day to begin our Lessons. If your a poet or someone who loves of poetry and savor and enjoy listening to Poems come and join us.
The Haiku poem is a Japanese art form which we were all introduced to this interesting Japanese art form back in our High School days. Do you remember that because I do.
Haiku is a simple, non-rhyming poem consisting of short and simple, 3 line stanzas consisting of 5-7-5 syllables. The subject of the poem can be about anything: love, nature, life or any other topic that you desire.
Here are ways to enjoy International Haiku Poetry Day:
- Go to a park with friends or or family and sit on a blanket under a shady tree and read Haiku poems.
- Are you feeling creative? Try your hand at creating a Haiku poem today. You might be amazed at how easy it is to do! Charlie and I will be creating our own Poems and I am going to try and get David to as well. Wish me luck…
Did You Know? April is National Poetry Month.
Aday to stuff yourself with Cheeseballs. But wait!!! What kind of Cheeseball are we talking about? There’s the light and airy, puffy Cheeseball that you munch on for a snack by the dozens.
Or there is the Cheeseball, often decorated with nuts, that sits on a party tray until spread on a Cracker. In celebration of this special holiday event, let’s celebrate and enjoy both kinds of Cheeseballs.
When it comes toCheeseball snack, we are certain that you can’t eat just one. Not even a handful. Cheeseball can be addicting. If my mom was here I would tell you to ask her.
When Charlie was smaller Cheeseballs is the only kind of Chips he would eat. Just like David’s dad. But I can’t speak to loudly because I like Cheeseball as well. How about you?
Here is a funny tip about me I love Pecans and will eat most anything that has them on it or in it. But I do not eat Cheeseballs covered in Pecans and served on Crackers. Do you?
For a snack this morning place a bowl of Cheeseballs on the table, and watch them disappear right before your eyes. Toddlers and young kids are Cheeseball hounds. So are teenagers and adults. In other words, everyone likes Cheeseballs.
Cheeseballs of Holiday trays are equally loved. Strangely, it is wildly popular around the Christmas Holidays and hard to find other times of year. Although, lots of people make there own Cheeseballs and you can find a recipe here.
Celebrate this Cheesy day with which ever Cheeseballs you prefer or even (both kinds). After dinner during your favorite Television show, or whenever its convenient.
Record Store Day – third Saturday in April
I am so excited Records are coming back out. Did you know for Christmas David and Charlie bought me a Record Player and each week I have been purchasing one Record.
The nice part is Charlie enjoys listening to the Records just as much as I do. Charlie and David have even helped me pick out which records to purchase for the week.
As well as going with me to Record Stores like Chief Records on the Fort Worth Stockyards or off Doc’s Records & Vintage off Montgomery and 7th Street in Fort Worth.
Music defines the culture of each generation. Like any technology, the record industry has seen a huge evolution and succession of record formats over the past 60 years.
In today’s high tech world, digital downloading of music, has all but replaced physical records in any format. Which stinks. As downloading of music has grown in use, record stores have declined in numbers.
Major chain music stores have disappeared, along with many independent stores. It is only fitting, that today we celebrate the hundreds of independently owned records stores that remain and the culture they represent, even as they dwindle in number.
If your Homeschooling your children take them on a #FieldTrip to visit a Record for there Music Class because you never know what you might see while visiting the Record Store.
The Changing Record Format
Record formats have changed with the times and technology. First came 78 rpm vinyl records. They were replaced by 33 rpm and 45 rpm vinyl records. The record industry reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s.
These records were bought by the millions for every hit song or album. Like every product, records slowly became obsolete, as new recording formats with better sound quality and more record storage capabilities came on the market.
First, there was beta and audio cassettes. The pace of the decline of vinyl records seriously increased with the arrival or audio CDs. Then, Ipods hit the market by storm, as digital downloading of music arrived on the scene. Digital downloads of songs onto a wide variety of devices, has all but eliminated the existence of any physical records.
Record Stores that have survived has evolved their product line to fit a digital world. Support them, by purchasing a record or two. Record stores will recognize this day with special events and store specials on sale.
I wish David was off so we could go look because there is so many Records I would like to purchase not only for myself but David and Charlie as well. Would you like to come with me?
World Circus Day – is the third Saturday in April
When I was a child I went to the Circus every year and wouldn’t miss it no, matter what was happening. Then I grew up and Suzzie came along. I tried to take her as much as I could.
Then my nephew David arrived and his mom and I toook Suzzie and David. But as David got older he didn’t want to go. We stopped going and I missed the Circus.
Then David and I got together and we went once when we was dating. Then when Charlie came along we went once or twice but its been years since we have been.
With Charlie turning 14 this year I believe its time to go to the Circus before Charlie gets to big to go with me. Did you know the Barnum & Bailey Circus is in November and a lot of times it falls on my Birthday. Making this the perfect Birthday Gift for me.
When is World Circus Day? This holiday event is held on the third Saturday in April. At one time there was a Circus called Circus Espana in the Fort Worth Stockyards we can check out as a #HomeschoolFieldTrip.
Send in the clowns! Today is World Circus Day. Everywhere in the world, it’s always been a big deal when the Circus comes to town. Or at least for me it is.
The Carnival atmosphere, the big tent, Lions, Elephants, death-defying daredevil acts, sword swallowers, clowns and much more awaits circus guests young and old.
The circus, with its wide range of entertainers, has performed their acts around the world, in small towns and big cities for hundreds of years. The Circus is still alive and well in many parts of the world.
In the US, this isn’t the case. Since the 1800’s Americans in small towns and big cities flocked to the Circus when it came to town. Decades ago, there were several Circuses traveling and preforming in the U.S.
Today, the Circus no longer brings smiles and laughter. Isn’t that sad? The Circus has fallen silent, a victim of animal rights group protests, falling attendance, and higher operating costs.
Since 1919, Barnum & Bailey Circus performed their acts all over the U.S. They were billed as “The Greatest Show on Earth”. They performed their last act on October 6, 2018, putting a sad face on Clowns all over the United States.
To celebrate this day, make plans to see a Circus, if they come anywhere close to you. Short of that, you can watch movies with a circus theme. Like the Greatest Showman or The Greatest Show On Earth.
Suggested Circus Movies:
- At the Circus
- Ring Circus
- Charlie Chan at the Circus
- Big Top Pee-wee (yes, Pee Wee Herman)
- Circus World
- The Great Wallendas
History and Origin of “World Circus Day”:
World Circus Day event was created in 2009 by the Federation Mondiale du Cirque.
Thank you,
