Opening week kicks off Sept. 24 with Phase I ribbon-cutting and Phase II groundbreaking ceremonies for the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum Arts and Performance Complex, followed by art- and architecture-focused Media Day tour/luncheon of the new Crow Museum on Sept. 25
WHAT: The Crow Museum of Asian Art of The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) will debut its second location – a new museum on the university’s campus in Richardson – with celebration events beginning Sept. 24. A ribbon cutting dedication for Phase I (the new Crow Museum and additional galleries) and the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II (the forthcoming performance hall and music building) will be held for the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum Arts and Performance Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 24. An art- and architecture-focused Media Day tour and lunch is set for Wednesday, Sept. 25, and the week culminates with a family-friendly Community Day Sept. 28.
The Crow Museum is one of a handful of museums in the U.S. solely dedicated to Asian art – and the Crow Museum is the largest in the Southwest. The original downtown location will remain open permanently, continuing its vibrant presence on Flora Street in the Dallas Arts District.
BACKGROUND: Designed by internationally renowned architectural firm, Morphosis, the new Crow Museum facility is the first cultural building to be completed as part of the O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum, which is supported by a $32 million gift from the O’Donnell Foundation.
Upon completion, the 12-acre cultural district will house three buildings – the Crow Museum of Asian Art’s second location and additional galleries, a performance hall and music building, an additional planned museum and a dedicated parking garage – that surround a central plaza and gathering space.
Serving as the gateway to the UT Dallas campus, the O’Donnell Athenaeum will become a destination to foster engagement in the arts and learning not only for college students, faculty and staff but for the surrounding communities, Texans and visitors from across the globe.
