Charlie has been begging to get a job the past couple months and now that we are moving. I think I’ve going to let Charlie start applying for work. This way he can earn his own money and the job can be a part of Charlie’s Homeschool Classes.
Even though it’s hard to believe Charlie is 14. I wanted to share companies that hire 14-year-old. This way if you have a child looking for work, they can use this list and look online. There may be other companies that hire 14-year old’s if you live out of State as this is companies located in Dallas/ Fort Worth.
Before your child starts to apply for a job you need to know what laws affect younger teens?
If you child is under 14 according to the Fair Labor Standards Act, they are not eligible for work. Fourteen is the minimum hiring age for non-agricultural employment. There are limits on the number of hours minors can work. As well as the types of jobs 14- and 15-year-old can perform.
14 and 15-year-old employees work must be performed outside of school hours, and they may not work:
- More than 3 hours on a school day, and even though Friday’s can be referred to as the weekend they can only work 3 hours on it as well.
- Teens can only work 18 hours per week when school is in session.
- More than 8 hours per day when school is not in session.
- More than 40 hours per week when school is not in session.
- Before 7 AM or after 7 PM on any day, except June 1st through Labor Day. Then night-time work hours are extended to 9 PM.
In some states, for jobs that do hire 14 and 15-year-old teens, may need to obtain a work permit. The best way to find out if they’ll need to complete this step is by consulting with their school’s guidance office or the State Department of Labor.
Some exceptions may apply, teens must generally be paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Although, this will depend on what the teens do and where they work.
