I would like to share a new Christmas Gift Guide 2019 Sponsor Hachette’s Grand Central Publishing with everyone. They’re sending me a copy of Why Will No One Play With Me?
Thousands of parents have successfully coached their children to make friends, find acceptance and have a happier childhood thanks to parenting coach Caroline Maguire, ACCG, PCC, M.Ed., who pulls together the most popular and powerful tools from her groundbreaking program in WHY WILL NO ONE PLAY WITH ME?: The Play Better Plan to Help Children of All Ages Make Friends and Thrive (Hachette’s Grand Central Publishing; September 24, 2019).
Maguire speaks over 250 times per year to parents, teachers, caregivers and administrators around the country and discusses:
· How to get your child to open up, move out of his/her comfort zone and develop self-awareness which is something Charlie struggles with because we all know he has been bullied numerous times.
· Or she will share how to have hard conversations about social challenges and not surrender the conversation no matter how difficult the child may be which is the problems we have been having with Charlie.
I also like how she will discuss planning play dates, and she will go over how to coach from the sidelines and when to intervene which I have a hard time doing because I always want to be a hands on parent.
One thing I don’t have trouble with Charlie is how to talk about social exclusion with your children and teach them to include others because he always excludes both adults and children.
If I could listen to Caroline Maguire discuss social exclusion in person I would attend her class. My family sees children being left out more and more which we don’t think is right.
Maguire’s tangible, hands-on guide teaches parents how to help their children develop the executive function and social skills they need to thrive and after scrolling through her book Why No One Will Play With Me I wish every school had this book for teachers and parents to read.
The Play Better Plan helped not only Charlie but the kids gain in the neighborhood gain confidence to make friends and get along with others and even as a adult I was able to learn and use these tools.
· Social Sleuthing – learning to pay attention to social cues from other
· Post-Play Date Huddles – helping kids figure out what to look for in a friendship
· Reflective Listening – improving your child’s relationships with their peers
The book is receiving great advanced praise:
Publishers Weekly: “This thoughtful, compassionate primer to helping children overcome social challenges from Maguire, a coach for children with ADHD and their families, puts a full roster of tools, along with some encouragement, into the hands of parents… Maguire’s primer nonetheless breaks down an issue that can seem overwhelming into practical, bite-size chunks, and parents willing to prioritize her solutions should find this guidebook comprehensive and usable.”
