Dos Ron: The Legacy, The Vision, The Reality
The history of Dos Ron is rich and intriguing, much like their rums. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century in the Las Villas region of Cuba, the Colina family farmed sugarcane on their plantation. Using a secret family recipe, they produced some of the finest solera rums.
Carlos Morfa was the eighth of ten children in the Morfa/Colina family. As a boy, Carlos learned the art of rum making working side-by-side with his father, José Luis Morfa and also known as Don Colina, in the fields and in the distillery. That distillery still stands today.
In the aftermath of the Castro Revolution, Don Colina and his family were dispossessed of their distillery. Unlike many others, Carlos’ father chose to stay and work in the distillery that his family used to own.
Carlos lived in Cuba with his family until the early 1970’s. At the age of 20, he signed up for a state-ran work program and boarded a plane with hundreds of other young men without knowing where they were going. They landed in East Germany as part of a labor-for-goods exchange between the communist countries. He worked there in factories and eventually met his future wife. They spent the next several years working in East Germany, occasionally traveling to Cuba to see their families.
In 1989, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Carlos and his wife moved to Cologne and opened a successful Cuban restaurant called “Carlos.” One success led to more, and Carlos opened a series of restaurants. However, his lifelong dream was to bring his family’s rum business back to life.
In 2001, Carlos reconnected with his father’s former business partner who had fled Cuba during the Castro revolution. He was producing small batches of rum in the Dominican Republic. Carlos traveled to the Dominican to join him. Carlos began master blending, using rums already aging in their special oak casks. He fine-tuned the techniques and secret recipe his father taught him, and created Dos Ron or “Two Rums,” as a tribute to his father, and the years they worked together making fine rums.
In 2012, Dos Ron announced a limited release blend and by 2013 Dos Ron was distributed throughout Europe by luxury brand distributor, Jacquart. Dos Ron has emerged as a luxury brand in the EU, winning numerous gold medals at the International Spirits Awards. Dos Ron is now set to make its US debut in select markets throughout 2018.
