can you use deionised water in a humidor?
A humidor is an enclosed container to store cigars while protecting them from damage by the environment and surroundings. Humidor boxes are regularly developed of wood and are likewise made of acrylic, glass, and metal. The inside is usually fixed with Spanish cedar or mahogany wood facade.
To provide the intended protection, you need to prepare the humidors before using them. The process of preparing these boxes is called seasoning. A complete acrylic humidor does not require seasoning or maintenance of any kind and is easiest to use. But if you decide to have wooden or cedar humidor boxes, you need seasoning for those.
Cigars absorb humidity like a sponge. This absorption could result in added flavor of surroundings or chemicals used in humidor manufacturing. The cigars could get damaged by the climate as well. Assuming they are kept in a not precisely ideal environment, cigars can turn dry or become excessively soaked. Considering that they are put away appropriately, your cigars will age, consume and smoke in fantastic equilibrium. To keep the cigars fresh and in premium taste, you must season your humidors.
The most crucial ingredient in seasoning is water. Purified water, free from bacteria and harmful chemicals, is the only way to keep your humidors in optimum storing condition. The more filtered the water is, the better it will be for the humidor. There is a lot of debate on whether one should use tap, distilled, or deionized water for seasoning the humidor. One thing everybody agrees on is not using tap water. Tap water contains many probable impurities and chemicals that can damage the cigars in a humidor.
Distilled and deionized waters are purified waters. The difference between distilled and deionized water is the end product. Distilled water is pure water without any chemical compounds that might harm the cigars in a humidor. Deionized water is pure water free of all chemicals and nutrients. It holds the perfect pH value of 7.0 than slightly acidic distilled water having a pH of 6.0. The deionized water is the best and purest water you could get your hands on for seasoning your humidors.
The best relative moistness (RH) level for cigar support in a humidor ranges 64-72%. These could be changes upon the smoker’s personal preference. One thing to be noted is that it should not exceed 75%. Excessive moisture will damage your cigars for sure.
Ultrasonic humidification is also used to store cigars but is a more complex strategy to control humidity on large scales.
Temperature is also an essential factor, along with deionized water. Your humidor is best held inside for ideal cigar conservation in temperatures under 77 degrees. Average room temperatures are frequently kept up with via cooling and fall between 68-77 degrees, so in many cases, the temperature is something that you don’t have to stress over.
Deionized water is the best you can get for the seasoning of your humidor to have a premium taste and protection of cigars for months and years to come.
