Cake Mix Learning to love all your ingredients by Mikki Hernandez (Author), Victoria Lewis (Illustrator)
Remi new school was smaller than her last school and should be easier to make friends at. Mrs. Sanchez is Remi’s new teacher. At recess the kids began to ask her questions like “why are your eyes’ lights if you have dark skin?” or “What are you?” She said I am a kid but then realized no, one else looked like her.
She runs to the restroom to cry so no; one will see her. Remi begins to examine herself in the mirror asking herself what she is. At home her mom asks if something is wrong. Remi ask her mom what she is. Instead of her mother answering Remi she asks Remi if she would like to bake a cake. Before you ask me, what does baking a cake have to do with what Remi is. I don’t know… To find our you would need to read Cake Mix Learning to love all your ingredients.
Her mom went over what ingredients they would need to make a Cake which Charlie and I could use in our Homeschool Cooking Class to make our own cake. Her mom asked questions about the cake and Remi said no, to her questions. To find out what they are once again you will need to read the book.
Her mom reminds Remi she has a lot of ingredients that mix together to make her. Then her mom tells her she is mixed because her mom and dad’s people come from all over making her have different ethnics. A new word for Charlie to study in our Homeschool and to add to our spelling words this week. Allowing me to have a new teaching moment with my family all thanks to Cake Mix Learning to love all your ingredients..
Remi relizes she doesn’t look funny and brings her mom to school the next day to host a baking lesson. No, I am not going to tell you what happenes because you need to pick up your own copy of Cake Mix Learning to love all your ingredients to find out.
Before you ask this is the perfect book for children of all ages and yes, adults will enjoy the story as well. All schools should keep a copy in their library as well as counselors because this book can be used when dealing with bullying because being different confuses people and causes them to act out at times.
A young mixed-race girl named Remy, encounters that intrusive question, “What are you?” during her first day at a new school, which sends her on a journey towards self-acceptance. Feeling confused about where she belongs, Remy learns about ethnicity and what it means to be mixed by doing her favorite activity with her mother: baking. When she then returns to school, Remy shares the importance and deliciousness of celebrating different backgrounds with all of her classmates.
