Children's Book Reviews

I wanted to share a children’s book with you this evening. Baking Up Love by Alan Page (Author), Kamie Page (Author), David Geister (Illustrator) I received a copy of in exchange for this review. Inside this post is my affiliate links. If you click on the links and make a purchase I will make a small percentage from the products you purchase.

I loved finding out the story has the child baking a Dessert to showcase the child’s favorite book. Ester wants to make Chocolate Cupcakes with Chocolate Butter Cream Icing ie Frosting with Gummy Bears which I would pass on but Charlie and David would like a lot.

Oh, no her mom isn’t home. No, fear her Grandfather is and he offers to help Ester bake the Cupcakes. They gather the ingredients they will need following the recipe step by step. Now its time to put the Cupcakes into the oven.

Only her Grandfather says they need one more ingredient. Can you guess what it is? Well it’s LOVE!! The next day at school Ester has fun sharing her Dessert with her friends and her book and celebrating the Literacy Fesrt.

If Charlie was #Homeschooling still we would have used the recipe in the book for the Chocolate Cupcakes and created our own Literacy Feast and shared our favorite books from when Charlie was a child to know as a Teenager. Then I would have shared my favorite book. Would you want to join us to share your favorite book and dessert with us?

Baking Up Love is the perfect book for elementary students but children younger than that would enjoy the story if there parents would read it to them. If adults enjoy #cooking they would enjoy the story and the recipe the Authors included.

About the Book:

Esther and her mom are supposed to bake Cupcakes after school this afternoon for tomorrow’s Literacy Feast.

But when Esther arrives home, her mom is still at work, and she finds Grandpa snoozing in his favorite reading chair. “Grandpa! Wake up!” Grandpa reassures a doubtful Esther that he does in fact know how to bake, a skill he learned from Esther’s late Grandmother. Grandpa and Esther bake, dance, and sing, filling the kitchen, and their hearts, with Grandma’s special ingredient―love.

Imagine a recipe where the most important ingredient isn’t sugar or flour, but love. Baking Up Love (Page Education Foundation / January 1, 2025 / $18.99) by Alan and Kamie Page invites young readers into the kitchen, where a grandfather and granddaughter bond over baking cupcakes for a school celebration, using a secret ingredient taught by Grandma. Set against the backdrop of a school Literacy Feast, this heartfelt children’s story honors family traditions, blending joy, memory, and connection through a simple but powerful act: baking together.

Alan Page, NFL Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice, and Kamie Page, a dedicated fifth-grade teacher, offer young readers a unique blend of inspiration and diversity through Baking Up Love. This story not only entertains but also promotes essential values of literacy, representation, and community bonding. Proceeds from the book support the Page Education Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Alan and his late wife Diane, which provides scholarships and mentorship to young Minnesota students of color.

Ideal for children ages 4-8, parents, educators, and community advocates, Baking Up Love is a must-read that invites readers to celebrate family heritage and the love that lives on in cherished family traditions.
