The Passover Surprise by Janet Ruth Heller

Children's Book Reviews

This is a review for the childrens book The Passover Surprise by Janet Ruth Heller illustrated by Ronald kauffman which I recieved a copy of in exchange for this review.

Reading is one thing I’m Passionate about. No, matter what I teach or Charlie wants to learn that day we set aside time for reading. When I look for books I like to find subjects my family doesn’t know anything about to keep the learning going even when we finish the book.

For my family that happened with The Passover Surprise which we plan on using in our Homeschooling Class when we are studying Holidays this year. Until then Charlie and I’ve added The Passover Surprise to our Library were setting up in our schoolroom.

Charlie was able to read The Passover Surprise on his own and we did find words Charlie didn’t know which we’ve turned into Spelling Words. Charlie will be looking up the definition for words as well. The nice part is the Author has helped us as because if you look in the back of the book some of the words are in there definitions but there were even more words from the book Charlie wants to look up.

David heard me and Charlie reading The Passover Surprise. While discussing the food being mentioned in The Passover Surprise. Charlie and David are looking up the recipes to create in our Homeschool Home Econimics Cooking Class.

I love how inside The Passover Surprise talked about Stamps. As well as collecting Staamp which Charlie can do as a Extra Curricular Class or Hobby for school. Charlie liked hearing what different stamps might have on them and now he wants to take a Field Trip to our Post Office to see what stamps they have. Would you like to join us?

All three of use enjoyed learning what Lisa and her brother Jon’s father did. As well as the women whome we can research for Language Arts. Then we can draw some of the things we found in the book creating stamps in our Art Class and act out in Charlie’s Drama Class.

I loved how the Author included God in The Passover Surprise. I was able to show Charlie a word he thought was bad and shouldn’t be said wasn’t and how the word could be used turning it from being bad to good. Although he still shouldn’t use this word without David and I being around.

The Passover Surprise (Fictive Press, 2016) is a middle-grade fiction chapter book by Janet Ruth Heller and the illustrator is Ronald Kauffman.

The price for this book is $10.33 for the paperback edition. The Passover Surprise is a great gift because the book helps children deal with sibling rivalry, favoritism, and family conflict. Teaching them how to handle problems without keeping it inside.

Lisa and her little brother Jon enjoy collecting stamps.  But when their father holds a contest to decide which child will get a new large stamp album, Lisa has to solve a difficult problem.

This book takes place around 1960 and includes details about Jewish Soldiers’ experiences during World War II and early stages of the Civil Rights Movement.  Giving Charlie and I a new subject to research for History Class.

The Passover Surprise also portrays a Jewish family celebrating Sabbath and Passover.  Parents and teachers can use the Discussion Guide to discuss issues raised in this book, such as sibling rivalry, bullying, discrimination, and Jewish traditions, with their children and students.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
