Back to School Time Capsule

This is the last year Charlie will be in Elementary school and I wanted to make this year a lot of fun and a year that we would always remember. This morning Charlie and I were discussing Time Capsules.

Charlie had watched Property Brothers and they had a couple create one to leave in a home they was selling. Charlie asked me about creating a time capsule together before he returns to school this year.

I was thinking about getting the items we need to put ours together and I remembered the first year Charlie’s school was built and they put a time campsule under a tree in the front of the school.

I mentioned this to Charlie and let him know his sister Suzzane’s Biological grandmother had items in that capsule. Then I decided to look online and see if I could find instructions on how to create a Time Capsule.

I landed on Education.com and they have a resource called Back to School Time Capsule. I plan on downloading for Charlie and me to use in our classroom.

Then we will bury it in our front yard. The only thing I am worried about is keeping the dogs from digging our time capsule up so Charlie and I have decided to purchase a tree to plant on top of our time capsule.

The tradition of creating a time capsule is an old one, but the activity never loses its appeal. Gathering artifacts for a time capsule is a significant activity: when your child places items in there time capsule before the first day of school, she is able to reflect on the summer, the previous school year, and what she has learned and experienced, all the while anticipating what the next school year will be like.

In this process, she will not only preserve belongings of intangible value in the time capsule, but will be able to sift through the capsule’s contents in the future — at the end of the school year, perhaps — and reflect on what really happened and how they have changed and grown.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
