Back to School Season has arrived for most children and with school families will resume #Homeschooling. Charlie will be required to read on a daily basis. I would like to share a children’s Sports book I received Hair Like Obama’s Hands Like Lebron’s by Carole Boston Weatherford (Author), Savanna Durr (Illustrator) in exchange for this review. Charlie has been obsessed with #Basketball forever and this is the one #sport Charlie would play in his Homeschool PE Class over and over. The LA Lakers Lebron is one of Charlie’s favorite players along with Kobe.
When I heard about Hair Like Obama’s Hands Like Lebron’s I couldn’t wait to read the book to see what I thought Charlie would think of the story. The only thing I wasn’t sure about was the book also being about Obama who Charlie isn’t to crazy about.
I sat down t read the book and Charlie walked over to see what I was doing. As soon as he saw the little boy with the #basketball Charlie opened the book up to read the story. Charlie wanted me to let you know it is for younger children but anyone who likes Obama or Lebron will enjoy the story.
Charlie was amazed to find out the book was inspired by the famous White House photo of five-year-old Jacob Philadelphia touching Barrack Obama’s hair and yes, we said 5-years-old. We learn through the story what makes all brown and black kids strong, resilient and powerful.
In the book we also learn about Astronaut John Coltrane and Engineer Guion Bluford we could have studied in our #Homeschool Classes if Charlie hadn’t graduated but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t still learn new things.
Hair Like Obama’s Hands Like Lebron’s is a children’s picture book and celebration of Black History. I wish I had knew about this book in February when we celebrated Black History Month around the world. Charlie also learned about “Ice” McDonald’s wands who we hadn’t heard of. Have you?
Charlie thought it was fun to find out who created the Super Soaker Toy and no, we are not going to tell you. You need to read this amazing book with your family to find out who invented the Super Soaker Toy then pick one up to share with your friends and family.
If your teaching your children #History this year Hair Like Obama’s Hands Like Lebron’s is the perfect book to use for History, Reading and to even help you find new Field Trips to go on with your family. Charlie was amazed to even find the Author had mentioned Micael Jordan.
If your studying States the book mentions Africa. I love how the Author reminds us “if you can see it, you can be it”. The Author also reminds us to “dare to dream big” which both children and adults should be reminded of at all times. In the back of the book is more information on the people in the book.
About the book:
From Colin Kaepernick to Martin Luther King, Jr. to Benjamin Crump, Hair Like Obama’s, Hands Like Lebron’s is a picture book celebration of Black history and excellence from New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Savanna Durr.
I have hair like Obama’s and hands like LeBron’s.
My mind is more magical than “Ice” McDonald’s wands.
My legs, like Michael Jordan’s, shatter records with a leap.
My soul is kissed by Africa—the future’s mine to keep.
Inspired by the famous White House photograph of five-year-old Jacob Philadelphia touching then-president Barack Obama’s hair, Weatherford’s powerful text—illuminated by Savanna Durr’s warm, jewel-toned art—is an ode to all the things that make Black and brown kids beautiful.
Young readers will learn about many inspiring figures in Black history up to the present day, gaining confidence in their abilities and their cultural legacy as they learn. The back matter includes an author’s note and biographies of each of the featured figures: Guion Bluford, Usain “Lightning” Bolt, “Bootsy” Collins, John Coltrane, Benjamin Crump, LeBron James, Lonnie Johnson, Michael Jordan, Colin Kaepernick, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Elijah McCoy, Kenrick “Ice” McDonald, Barack Obama, Colin Powell, and Tommie Smith.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
