I don’t know about you, but I love watching movies featuring Al Pacino. I can’t wait to let David know Alamo Drafthouse is all about two things – 4/20 and Al Pacino. Celebrate both with our Aprilcino and Alamo Dankhouse series, featuring titles like SCARFACE, CARLITO’S WAY, DAZED AND CONFUSED, and MANDY. Plus, join us for EVIL DEAD II and SELENA Movie Parties, along with the return of Champagne Cinema with CLUELESS, and much more.
Ahh, spring. There’s just something about flowers blooming and Sun shining that makes us want to watch Tony Montana introduce an army of assassins to his little friend. If you feel the same, then join us for a nice mug of Aprilcino, during Alamo Drafthouse month-long celebration of one Alfredo James Pacino. Aside from SCARFACE, we’ll be screening Pacino classics like CARLITO’S WAY, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, SEA OF LOVE, CRUISING, and yes, even JACK & JILL for all you Dunkaccino (RIP) lovers.
I don’t know about you, but I would love being able to watch SCARFACE with David and Charlie. In memory of Suzzane because you might not believe it but she loved Scarface and his little friend and if truth be told I am not sure I’ve ever sat down and watched the entire movie. Have you? If so did you like it or not?
If you’re an observer of the 20th day of the fourth month, which I am not but Alamo Dankhouse series might be just the blend you’re looking for. We’re lighting up the kindest of high art films, from the stoner classic DAZED AND CONFUSED to the psychedelic, psychotronic, phantasmagoric MANDY. You don’t have to celebrate the high holiday with a screening of Nas and DMX’s neon-soaked gangster dreamworld, BELLY, but it’d be a lot cooler if you did. As for these movies I don’t belive I’ve seen any of them and honestly I don’t think I would want to watch them. How about you?
If you prefer your inebriants in liquid form, then you’ll definitely be happy to hear that Champagne Cinema is back! Pairing the most effervescent films with themed drinks, Including a CLUELESS Movie Party, complete with fun props and plenty of bubbly. More into deadites or tejano music? Our EVIL DEAD II Movie Party and SELENA Movie Party are filled with collectibles and interactive fun – groovy.
You shouldn’t have to ask me which movie about I would most want to see because everyone know I love Selena and watch this movie anytime it’s on. Although seeing Clueless might be fun as well because I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and watched this entire movie. Have you? As for Evil Dead11 Movie Party there is no, way no, how I would watch it. How about you?
We’re also celebrating over 60 years of the world’s smoothest spy with our 007 series, including FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE. Now for the real sickos who want the very best in horror and wild gems, our Terror Tuesday and Weird Wednesday series continue to bring the very best in genre madness to select markets.
Charlie and David like James Bond a lot. For Easter I might take David and Charlie to see From Russia With Love and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Would you like to go with them then I can see a movie I would like. If not I will be nice and go with David and Charlie because we can study Spy’s and Janes Bond in our Homeschool Drama Class.
Aprilcino: SCARFACE (1983)
COME ON, PELICANS!
There’s no shortage of iconic films from director Brian De Palma. But 1983’s SCARFACE is its own kind of cocaine-dusted brilliance. Some 40 years on, this story of the vicious side of the American dream reverberates heavily throughout popular culture – so much so that it’s nearly impossible to even say this movie’s name without conjuring that singular image of Tony Montana brandishing his “little friend.”
That makes it easy to forget there is a real movie here that lives up to the hype. Oliver Stone is in top form as screenwriter and De Palma paints a bloody portrait like no other. Al Pacino is absolutely magnetic as the Cuban exile who quickly moves up the ranks of a drug cartel, displacing its leader while also seducing his woman (an excellent Michelle Pfeiffer). The wealth and power come with costs, and soon Tony finds those he cared for most to be lost to him. Things just get nastier as he tries to stay at the top – and every frame of it is downright electrifying.

Join us at this very special Movie Party as we celebrate the life and music of one of America’s most beloved icons, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Sure, we could just sit quietly and watch the magnificent 1997 film SELENA, starring Jennifer Lopez in a star-making performance. But we think the best way to honor Selena is to share in the joy of her music.
Champagne Cinema: CLUELESS Movie Party
MAKE A CAMEO AT THIS INTERACTIVE PARTY
Before reinventing Jane Austen became cliché, Amy Heckerling adapted the classic story of Emma into a hilarious, insanely clever satire of adolescence in Beverly Hills. CLUELESS spawned fashion trends, countless slang terms (AS IF!), and gave Alicia Silverstone a reason to exist beyond Aerosmith videos. Over 20 years later(!), we are still majorly, totally, butt-crazy in love with this movie.
At this special interactive screening, we’ll roll with the homies and say all of our favorite lines together, plus we’ll have props to help us pretend that, for one glorious night, we’re the Class of ’95 at Bronson Alcott High School.
We’ll play matchmaker for sweet old teachers, make a cameo at the Val party, and thank an LA city bus driver for taking a chance on an unknown kid. So slip on your Calvin Klein dress – or come dressed as any of your favorite characters (the more Dionnes, the better!) – and make time in your busy pants-dropping schedule to attend.
