A Safe Have for Newborns Announces Baby 390

The Mommies Reviews

January 1, 2024: The first Safe Haven newborn of 2024 was safely surrendered under Florida’s Safe Haven program, at a hospital in Florida’s Panhandle, Nick Silverio, founder of A Safe Haven for Newborns announced today.

This baby represents the 390th baby safely surrendered under Florida’s program since it was initiated in 2000.

The hospital and exact location is not published to ensure the mother’s anonymity is protected, as provided under Florida law.

“This is truly a cause for a New Year’s celebration,” said Silverio. “390 babies now have a promising future because of the work we and our partners are doing.

Under Florida’s Safe Haven statute, a newborn, seven days or younger, may be left with a staff member at a fire station or hospital, without fear of prosecution and guaranteed anonymity, provided the child is not harmed.

Since the statute’s ratification in 2000, A Safe Haven for Newborns, a Miami based, 501c3 organization, has supported the statute with a variety of services including assurance Safe Haven infants are properly cared for and placed with loving homes, a 24/7 multi-lingual hotline which has assisted thousands of mothers seeking advice, counseling, or assistance, providing community outreach, education, public awareness, and training and education for first responders and those who might receive a Safe Haven infant.

Since it’s inception A Safe Haven for Newborns has virtually eliminated infant abandonment in Florida with none reported from 2020 – 2022, and only three since then.

“The program works,” stated Silverio. Not only have we been successful in Florida, but have assisted other States, and internationally.” Silverio said the program is also serving as a model for programs in other states and countries around the world.

“We said from the very beginning, If we only save one life it’s worth it. With 388 babies saved to date, I think we’re doing okay,” said Silverio proudly.
