Good morning, welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: July 2022: National Watermelon Month. I don’t know about you but I don’t like Watermelon’s unless its Jolly Rancher’s Watermelon Candy. So I think I will sit out today with Charlie who also doesn’t like Watermelon. While David says bring it on and the more the better. LOL
July is National Watermelon Month
National Watermelon Day is celebrated on July 31
It’s July and Summer is in full swing and it’s hot and muggy outside, time to seek out a cold Summer treat. Time for Watermelon. You get to spend the whole month of July celebrating Watermelon. It’s very likely that in addition to enjoying slices of Watermelon, you will enjoy Watermelon in many other ways as well. Try Watermelon Daiquiris, or Watermelon Candy.
Did you know July is the peak harvest month for Watermelons, which ripen just in time for the Fourth of July holiday. Which is when we celebrate and enjoy baseball, Hot Dogs, fireworks and Watermelon. People consume a lot of Watermelons during Summer months. Watermelons are a healthy and nutritious Fruit can which should be eaten in other months of the year, too. Did you know that the entire Watermelon is edible? The rind can be pickled and used in Stir Fries. The seeds can be roasted and eaten as a snack, similar to Sunflower Seeds.
World Record Watermelon: Watermelons can grow quite large, actually huge. There are small, home garden varieties of Watermelons that just about fit into the palm of your hand. Then there is Watermelons that can weigh hundreds of pounds each. The world recorded the heaviest Watermelon to weigh in at 350.5 pounds on October 4th, 2013. This Watermelon was grown by Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee.
We encourage you to celebrate Watermelons not only all month long, but all Summer for that matter. This is the month to see how many different ways you can enjoy Watermelons.

The History and Origin of National Watermelon Month:
We did not discover the creator of this day. The National Watermelon Promotion Board sponsors and promotes this special holiday. It was formally declared in 2008.
National Watermelon Month is July, although National Watermelon Day is in August and before you ask no, one knows why this is, although having two days gives everyone an extra day to celebrate Watermelons!
This is a true “National” day because in 2008, the U.S. Senate passed a unanimous resolution designating the month of July as National Watermelon Month. The U.S. House of Representatives in 2009 also declared July to be National Watermelon Month. According to the National Watermelon Promotion Board spokeswoman Stephanie Barlow: “Congress has given us the opportunity to celebrate watermelons like we have never done before with promotions that we may not have dreamed of.”
