Learn about Butterflies Day- always held on March 14

Today is Learn About Butterflies Day which is fun day, because everyone loves Butterflies.

When we first heard about this Holiday, we thought how cool because Butterflies are fun to watch, flittering about the yard during the summer months.

Then we thought: Why hold Learn About Butterflies Day in March? There’s logic to this because as we approach Summer, we get outdoors and become busy with all of the activities of Summer. It’s far better to do a little learning in the Winter. Then we are better prepared to appreciate Butterflies as they re-appear in our backyards.

In keeping with the spirit of this Holiday, celebrate by learning about Butterflies. Purchase a Butterfly identification book, so you will know what Butterflies inhabit your yard. Importantly, learn how to attract Butterflies to your yard. You can do this by planting flowers that Butterflies like.

Join Charlie in our Homeschool Reading Class this morning as we read National Geographic Kids Look and Learn: Caterpillar to Butterfly (Look & Learn) Board book . Then if there is time I want to make Sugar Cookies shaped like Butterflies and work on the Butterfly Garden I want to set up. Would you like to help us out in our Garden?

National Potato Chip Day

National Potato Chip Day celebrates the Potato Chip. Did you know Potato Chips are America’s #1 snack food? But Potato Chips are not just a snack food. Potato Chips are the Potato of choice for lunchtime and dinner meals. Regular or plain Potato Chips are by far the most popular. Other popular flavors are Barbecue, Sour Cream & Onion, Oil & Vinegar, and Ranch.

Potato Chips were first made by Chef George Crum in Saratoga Springs, NY on August 24th, 1853. Americans have been in love with Potato Chips ever since.

Did you know you can make your own Potato Chips which is easy to do, and the kids will love these Potato Chips.

Celebrating National Potato Chip Day is easy. Eat Potato Chips for Lunch, Dinner and snacks. Don’t forget the dip!

History and Origin of “National Potato Chip Day”:

We did not find the creator, or the origin of this Holiday which was most likely created by the snack food industry.

This is referred to as a “National” Holiday, but we did not find any Congressional Records or Presidential Proclamations for this Holiday. Although if any snack food truly deserves a National Holiday, then the Potato Chip should be number one.

National Pi Day – Why today? Because today is 3.14, the value of Pi.

National Pi Day celebrates Pi, which is a mathematical concept. A number that never ends at least no one and no computer has found the end yet. Often, we round it off to 3.14. If you are a mathematician, this is your day. National Pi Day is a celebration of mathematics and more specifically it celebrates “Pi”.

Today is the birthday physicist Albert Einstein who was born on March 14th, 1879. The date is also represented as 3.14. We strongly suspect some combination of these two facts is why someone created this Holiday on March 14th. However, “Pi” was around long before Albert Einstein was born.

On Pi Day in 2004, Daniel Tammet recited 22,514 to digits.

History and Origin of “National Pi Day”:

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (HRES 224),[5] recognizing March 14, 2009 as National Pi Day.

The Holiday was created by Larry Shaw in 1989. This Holiday was originally celebrated at the San Francisco Exploratorium, where Shaw worked as a physicist.

Thank you,

  1. I love highlighting special days with children to learn more about a subject. There are a couple of wonderful indoor tropical butterfly nature centers in the Denver area that my grandchildren love to visit.
