Did you know March 12th is National Milky Way Day? We didn’t find any history of how this National Food Holiday came to be, but you can bet the Mars Confectionery Company had something to do with it.

With all of the Food Holidays you are supposed to celebrate it by eating the food celebrated on that Holiday, but I doubt too many people actually need a Holiday to indulge in this Chocolate treat.  I also don’t think they needed to create a Milky Way Day to get sales jumpstarted. The Milky Way bar was created in 1923 and in 1924 the Milky Way generated $800,000 in sales.

It was the first mass produced Chocolate bar with a filling. The name was actually taken from a popular Malted Milk Shake at the time, not the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Milky Way bar has come out in a number of different variations over the years, but the version of the Milky Way Candy Bar sold in Europe is also different from the one we enjoy in the USA.

Interesting Facts about Milky Way

  • The Milky Way bar was created in 1923 by Frank Mars.
  • In the 1920’s the Milky Way Bar came in two flavors Chocolate or Vanilla.
  • The Milky Way Bar was the first mass produced Chocolate Bar with a filling.
  • The name ‘Milky Way’ was taken from a popular Malted Milkshake NOT the Galaxy.
  • Outside of North America the Milky Way is a completely different kind Candy Bar.

Thank you,
