  Johnny Appleseed Day

March 11th and/or September 26th. Why two dates?……read on

Johnny Appleseed Day honors one of America’s great legends and before you ask yes, Johnny Appleseed was a real person. Born John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed was among the American settlers who were captivated by the movement west across the continent. As Johnny Appleseed travelled west, he sold Apple Trees and seeds to settlers, and planted many Apple Trees himself along the way. Johnny Appleseed continued planting and selling Apple Trees for over forty years. With every Apple Tree that was planted, the legend of Johnny Appleseed grew.

A Little About the Legend:

  • John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed) was born on September 26, 1774.
  • Johnny Appleseed was a nurseryman who started out planting trees in Western New York and Pennsylvania.
  • During the life of John Chapman, the “West” was places like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.
  • John Chapman was a deeply religious person and John Chapman was known to Preach during his travels.
  • According to legend, Johnny Appleseed led a simple life and wanted little. Johnny Appleseed rarely accepted money and often donated any money he received.
  • It is believed that Johnny Appleseed died on March 11, 1845, from what was referred to as the “Winter Plague”. The actual date of Jonny Appleseed’s death has been disputed.

There is a lot of “legend” in stories written about Johnny Appleseed. By its definition, over the years, legends grow bigger than life and it also appears that there is some link between Johnny Appleseed and very early Arbor Day celebrations.

Celebrate today with an Apple menu. Including fresh Apples for snacks, and Apple Cobbler or Apple Pie for dessert. If possible, make plans to plant an Apple Tree.

History and Origin of “Johnny Appleseed Day”:

There is plenty of documentation to support claims for Johnny Appleseed Day on March 11th abut also September 26th although we found no one who claims to have created this Holiday.

Here’s the information on the two dates:

  • John Chapman was born on September 26, 1774 and this date is undisputed.
  • It is believed John Chapman ie Johnny Appleseed died on March 11, 1845. However, the date of Johnny Appleseeds death was not formally recorded and the date of his death is disputed.

Here is how we come out on the debate: This day should be celebrated on the day of his birth and his birth date is undisputed. Johnny Appleseed’s birthday coincides with the season of the Apple Harvest. A birth is a more positive day than a death.

Worship of Tools Day – guys, you can relate- always held on March 11th.

There are few things that the male population worships more than his tools. To some, a tool is a natural extension of their arm. Worship of Tools Day is a logical day of celebration. And this Holiday is definitely a guy thing. Please note however, there are a few ladies who love to work with their hands and find today to be an important Holiday.

If you need a birthday or Christmas gift idea for one of the “boys” in the family?  Tools is always a good gift and you’re never lacking for tool ideas when you visit the local hardware store.

Celebrate today by working with tools and buying a tool or two. Receiving a tool as a gift today, makes this truly a Holiday.

Thank you,
