National Chili Day– always the 4th Thursday of month.
There’s nothing better to eat on a cold Winter’s Day than a bowl of Chili which is one of America’s favorite Wintertime meals. So, it’s only fitting that today is National Chili Day!
Did you know Chili was believed to be first created in San Antonio, Texas? Contrary to popular belief, Chili is not common on menus in Mexico.
There is no shortage of Chili recipes. Everyone has their own family recipe with their very secret ingredients to make their version of Chili blazingly hot. It’s the Chili Pepper and other Hot Peppers that puts the fire in the Chili.
The basic Chili recipe, by definition includes Tomatoes, Beans although a lot of people don’t use Beans, Chili Pepper, meat (usually Hamburger), Garlic, Onions, and Cumin. Then, comes a whole bunch of other ingredients that personalizes the Chili as our very own. Favorite Chili toppings are important, too and might be Cheese, Crackers, Cornbread, Sour Cream, and a host of other ingredients like Rice and Weiners which my dad used at times.
The Chili Pepper itself adds both flavor and heat. How much heat depends upon what Hot Peppers you add and the amount you use. Chili Peppers can be many colors, progressing from green to yellow, then orange and finally red.
Just for the record: Chili Con Carne is defined as a Stew with meat. There are also Meatless recipes, called Vegetarian Chili or simply “Chili”.
It’s easy to celebrate National Chili Day just a bowl of Chili. If you have time today, then you should make a pot of Chili for dinner. Or better still, organize or participate in a Chili Cook-Off.
Public Sleeping Day– always on February 28th.
Public Sleeping Day is an opportunity to sleep in public and we can think of a whole lot of places to sleep in the public eye.
You can sleep on a park bench, and you can doze on a blanket on the beach. Some people may opt to sleep on the job at their own risk. Have you ever caught twenty winks on a bus or subway traveling to or from work?
National Tooth Fairy Day – always on February 28th and/or August 22
National Tooth Fairy Day celebrates children’s favorite visitors The Tooth Fairy which is an American tradition with European and superstitious roots.
Losing baby teeth is a traumatic experience for young children. Enter the world of the Tooth Fairy. As a young child’s first baby tooth becomes lose, the child often fears losing it. The promise of a visit from the tooth fairy and a gift, turns the occasion into something to look forward to. When the tooth finally falls out, parents clean the tooth off and put it under the children’s pillow or into a “tooth box”. The tooth fairy comes after the child falls asleep. She takes the tooth and leaves a small gift, usually money. The tooth fairy leaves a gift every time the child loses a tooth.
If the tooth is literally lost in some way, don’t worry. The Tooth Fairy always knows and will still leave a gift. The Tooth Fairy magically knows each time a baby tooth falls out, and will arrive that night, even if the child is away at grandmas, or on vacation.
There is ongoing debate whether the Tooth Fairy is a male or a female. But it’s pretty obvious the Tooth Fairy” is most definitely a female.
The Tooth fairy delivers over $700 million dollars a year to children in the U.S., in exchange for a child’s baby teeth.
