Good morning, welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: December 30th, 2021. Today is a Holiday I don’t plan on celebrating unless Charlie and I decide to bake something in his Homeschool Baking Class, and we need to use Baking Soda. How about you do you plan on celebrating today and if so how and why.
National Bicarbonate of Soda Day
National Bicarbonate of Soda Day or Baking Soda day recognizes a staple of the home kitchen on December 30th.
“Just a spoonful of Sodium Bicarbonate” doesn’t have the same ring to it. But this extraordinary, naturally occurring substance provides health benefits while cleaning the house.
We add Baking Soda to recipes as a leavening agent to make baked goods rise. Baking Soda reacts with other Acidic ingredients to make that happen. Many of us have combined Baking Soda and Vinegar and seen the chemical reaction. When Carbon Dioxide is released, our baked goods rise.
It’s the exciting chemical makeup and physical characteristics of Baking Soda that enable it to be so effective. Since Baking Soda is mildly acidic when it is mixed with water, dirt and grease dissolve more efficiently.
As a gentle abrasive, Baking Soda makes an ideal cleaning product for kitchen appliances, pots, and pans. It’s even recommended for chrome and the exterior of automobiles.
The ability to neutralize odors is one of Baking Soda’s most powerful properties. By bringing the pH of the more acidic molecules into a more neutral balance, Baking Soda makes our homes and us fresh, Use Baking Soda as a Mouthwash, Toothpaste, or Deodorant for your mouth, feet, and underarms. Beyond personal hygiene, Baking Soda will help you take care of smells from pets and food, too.
Baking Soda can even help prevent powdery mildew or other fungal diseases on Plants. While Baking Soda may not always be effective, it doesn’t harm Plants when appropriately mixed.

Baking Soda — The Everyday Miracle ™
Did you know people call Baking Soda ‘The Everyday Miracle™’ because while Baking Soda is pure and simple, it’s also a versatile, multi-purpose product.
What is Baking Soda? Baking Soda, a Sodium Bicarbonate, is a naturally occurring substance that is
present in all living things–Baking Soda helps living things maintain the pH balance necessary for life. Baking Soda
is made from Soda Ash, also known as Sodium Carbonate.
The soda ash is obtained in one of two ways: it can be manufactured by passing Carbon Dioxide and Ammonia through a concentrated solution of Sodium Chloride which is table Salt. In our case, Baking Soda is mined in the form of an ore called trona. Whether the Soda Ash is mined or processed, it is dissolved into a solution through which Carbon Dioxide is bubbled, and Sodium Bicarbonate precipitates out, forming ‘Pure, Safe and Natural” Baking Soda. It is pure enough (more than 99%) to be listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) since 1848.
How can Baking Soda do so much, so well? It is the natural chemical and physical properties of Baking
Soda that account for its many safe and effective uses. ‘
The five specific capabilities of Baking Soda are:
Cleaning: Deodorizing Leavening: Fire Extinguishing Buffering
