Battle of the Baby Registries: Walmart vs. Target

Baby showers are a fun way to celebrate the coming arrival of your little one. They are also a great way for your friends and family to show their support and help you prepare for your growing family. Baby registries are a popular tradition and a great way to let people know what you want and need for your little one. They are also a great way to ensure that you don’t get five new diaper pails!

But where do you register? Are all registries the same or is one better than the rest? When you pick where to register, you want to choose somewhere that has the best options for you and your guests. Two of the most popular options are Target and Walmart. Let Mommies Reviews help you do a side-by-side comparison.

Points for Walmart

Location, Location, Location

In addition to offering lower prices, Walmart is also more accessible. Investopedia notes as of September 2019, there were over 5,000 Walmart stores in the United States compared to just over 1,800 Target stores. This makes it easier for shoppers who want to shop at the store and for parents who need to make a return.

Shop Around Online

Walmart offers a large bank of online resources that will help you decide everything from what to put on your registry to what type of car seat you should buy.

Points for Target

Opportunities Abound

Sure, there may be more Walmart stores than Targets, but with online access, it doesn’t really matter. Far and away, Target beats Walmart in almost every other category.

Both retailers allow expectant parents to return gifts to the store, but Target’s return period is four times as long as Walmart’s. Walmart gives parents 90 days to return gifts. Target allows a whole year. And about that whole accessibility issue – Target allows parents to add items from other retailers to their registry.

Win with Promos and a Target Coupon Code

Target realizes that you may not get everything you ask for on your registry, so they want to help you out. Eight weeks before your due date, Target will mail you a coupon for 15% off any remaining registry items (or any items you decide to add to your registry).

Combine that with the 5% Red Card discount and you can score some great deals, or for those who don’t need yet another credit card, search online for extra discount opportunities.

What Target and Walmart Have in Common

Target and Walmart are two of the largest retailers in the world. They offer a wide variety of products at affordable prices, and as you would expect, the two share a lot of similarities when it comes to their registries.

Both Walmart and Target allow users to create their registry online or at the store. Similarly, shoppers can buy in person or have an item shipped, and Money Crashers points out both stores offer a price match guarantee.

For expectant parents, they both offer a new parent welcome box filled with lots of goodies. Walmart includes a selection of essentials like nursing pads, diapers and wipes, along with a guide on what you should look for when you buy things like car seats. Similarly, The Penny Hoarder notes Target includes some basic necessities, like a prenatal multivitamin, diaper rash cream, and a pacifier.

Topping it all off, USA Today notes both stores offer one-day shipping now, along with the option of free shipping with a minimum order.

The bottom line

Both Walmart and Target offer many great features for buyers and parents, and if you’re looking for options, there’s nothing stopping you from registering at both — not to mention using a free logo maker to add a little personal style to your registry. By giving buyers more choices, you help ensure you get what you need. With online access available for each retailer, the best way to make the final choice is to go check them out for yourself to see which one works best for you.
