I always enjoy finding new Homeschool Mom’s to follow and this morning I would like to introduce you to Katelyn Rigg who has taken the time to share books she recommends with us. I don’t know about you but I remember reading Boxcar Children Series which was one of my favorite series as a child. Did you read these books as well or others on her list?

As homeschooling moms, one of our goals should be to instill a genuine love for reading in our children in order to create lifelong readers. Using high-interest books that engage children’s interest and attention is so important to cultivating this love for reading.

For beginner readers, I’d suggest reading decodable books since children at this age are still learning how to read. Spire and IMSE have great collections that are focused on the specific phonics skills you may be working on (short vowels, digraphs, etc.) The IMSE option is great for homeschooling since they’re super affordable and come in easy to print sets. You can find them at.

Once students have a solid word bank and firm foundation in phonics skills, children can begin exploring various books and genres that interest them. High interest series books helps get kids ‘hooked’ on reading and encourage them to keep coming back for more!

· Boxcar Children Series – These may be a bit more challenging for some readers, but this is a great series for parents to read aloud with their children. With over 120 books, this series will help the bond between parents and their children as they read and create memories together.

Who Would Win’ series   Kids love these nonfiction books that pit Animals against each other in scenarios to see “who would win?”

Magic Treehouse Series – These books are great options if you’re looking to transition your child from picture books to chapter books. Beloved characters Jack and Annie take off in magical adventures back in time. These historical fiction books engage children’s imagination and teach them about important historical events as well.

As children age, they should begin to evaluate their reading choices and find the genres or subjects that interest them. Hone in on that particular genre or interest and encourage your older child or teen to explore as much as possible about that subject or in that genre. Visit the library and seek the help of a librarian who can help your child with great suggestions. Book choices are so important, and finding ones of interest can help even the most reluctant reader cultivate a love for reading.
