Today is a sad dad in the Cates house as I share our series celebrating Food Holidays: October, 21: National Cookie Month. There isn’t anyone to share a Cookie with as Charlie has stopped eating Sweets. Yes, I am proud of Charlie but it isn’t any fun celebrating by myself. David is working and he isn’t much of a Cookie person either. Would you like to visit a Cookie Shop with me and share a Cookie or two? I won’t tell anyone.
National Cookie Month
Those of you who have an undying love of cookies might want to mark October on your calendar because this is National Cookie Month. An American Holiday dedicated to Cookies which can be eaten at any time of day night. For any meal. Before you ask even breakfast. Or at least Charlie and I would eat Cookies for breakfast and at times David would even join us. How about you. Would you like a Cookie for Breakfast?
History
While the origin of National Cookie Day is unknown, the History of the Cookie is a documented fact. Cookies were invented during the Seventh Century in Persia. Right around the time Sugar became a common resource in that region. It then spread throughout Europe thanks to the Muslim conquest of Spain. Cookies would continue to march across the Continent until it became one of the most prevalent snack foods in Europe by the Fifteenth Century.
The story of the Cookie doesn’t end in Europe however. In the Seventeenth Century Cookies made its way across the Atlantic into the Americas via the Dutch settlers of the time. Colonial housewives snatched up the concept of the cookie and began creating their own Cookies. These Cookies were most often simply flavored with Butter, with some of the more elaborate Cookies being flavored with Rose Water, Maple Syrup or Beer!
Today, Cookies is one of the most revered desserts in America. There are thousands of Cookie recipes that crowd cookbooks from the last two Centuries. Which can make choosing a Cookies hard. I guess that is just how the Cookie crumbles.
Observances and Traditions
No, one should wonder how to celebrate National Cookie Day, because it is one of the easiest Holidays in the world to celebrate. Just choose your a Cookie and give yourself permission to enjoy the taste anytime of the day or at any meal. if you have time you could bake Cookies. Looking to brighten someone’s day, then all you have to do is give out cookies.
Thank you,
