Welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: October 11th, 2021 National Sausage Day and with us leaving town tomorrow it might be easier to pick up Pizza this evening for dinner and since I love Sausage Pizza this would be the perfect way to celebrate today. What is your favorite Pizza and why? I will order that as well and you can come and eat with Charlie and I as David is working this evening.
National Sausage Pizza Day
Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the U.S—millions of people enjoying Pizza every week. I would like to let you know Sausage isn’t the most popular Pizza topping. This holiday is celebrated on October 11th every year, so people might want to enjoy Pizza on this Holiday.
The History Of Sausage Pizza
I would like to share Sausage Pizza was created which led us on a journey that spanned thousands of years and made us very hungry.
In order to find the History of Sausage Pizza, you have to research the History of Pizza. Pizza can be traced to a dish that Persian Soldiers made during the 6th Century BC. This dish was a Flatbread that was covered in Dates and Cheese and then baked in the Persian Soldier’s shields. The Greeks also made a dish using Flatbread that was called Plakous and topped with not only Cheese and Garlic but an assortment of Onions and Herbs.
Of course, all of these dishes were Flatbreads creations, and the modern Pizza wouldn’t be invented until 997 AD in Gaeta. This is when a dish was created that was very much like the Pizzas we enjoy today. Eventually, this dish would end up spreading to parts of Central and Southern Italy.
During World War II, Allied Troops stationed in Italy discovered Pizza, along with other types of Italian foods, and brought that desire for it back to the United States. Fortunately, Italian immigrants were already making their versions of Pizza, so when demand met supply, Pizzas took off.
We’re not really sure when the Sausage was added to Pizzas, but we’re willing to bet that it was probably one of the first ingredients. That’s because Sausage as a food has been around for thousands of years, probably predating Pizza itself, so we’d be surprised if many of these early Pizzas didn’t have Sausage as a topping.
Celebrating National Sausage Pizza
This Holiday can be easily enjoyed by taking a few moments and ordering or making your own Sausage Pizza. It’s also a good day to share pictures of your Sausage Pizza on Social Media using the Hashtag #NationalSausagePizzaDay. Maybe this Holiday will eventually promote Sausage from its place on the number two-position up to the number one position on the list Pizzas. Although technically it’s already there because Pepperoni just happens to be a type of Sausage.
Thank you,
