Welcome to our series sharing Unique Holidays: June 9th, 2021. Take a look at the Holidays and let me know which one you most would like to celebrate and why.
For me without a doubt its Donald Duck Day because Donald Duck is my favorite character. Even more than Eeyore. Yes, you heard me right more than Eeyore.
Donald Duck is one of the most iconic characters of the Disney franchise and has been, for multiple generations, and he has been one of the hallmarks of childhood and innocence.
Of a rage driven spite filled incoherent rambling while spraying the area around you like a sprinkler in high summer. There was something in Donald Duck that caused him to fly completely off the handle and rail at the slightest provocation that touched a part of us all.
Everyone had times when they’ve just had enough, and Donald gave us the perfect way to respond. By raging incoherently while stomping our feet. It pays to lose your cool once in a while.
Donald Duck may spark a plethora of childhood memories too, including the unique voice known as pseudobulbar dysarthria which may resonate in your mind and take you back to the old age times where you were tired and tried to emulate that voice with your friends, perhaps you still do!
I would like to share a tidbit about Charlie with you. Charlie practiced and practiced until he could talk like Donald Duck because he knows he is my favorite character. Ask Charlie to show you.
Donald Duck certainly does deserve to be celebrated and there is at least seventy years of joy he has brought to the world, what is your first memory of Donald Duck?
History of Donald Duck Day
Donald first appeared to us in a 1934 film called The Wise Little Hen, a retelling of the original little red hen story. Throughout Donald is repeatedly asked to help plant the corn, and harvest the corn, each time finding him claiming some form of ailment that prevents him from participating.
If you’ve seen this episode or read The Little Red Hen unlike that parable, The Wise Little Hen took a more direct approach to showing her displeasure. She told Donald she’d cure him of his ailment so he could eat the corn… and gave him castor oil.
While that was Donald Ducks first appearance, the angry rage filled Donald we came to know and love didn’t really show up until Orphan’s Benefit, and it was also then that his relationship with Mickey was formed.
Since then Donald Duck has gone on to appear in video games, episodes of cartoons, and stands out as the Disney character who has appeared in the most films to date, outstripping even Disney Mascot Mickey Mouse. Apparently, there’s something about a rage-filled Duck we just can’t get enough of.
Donald Duck is a character that we still see popping up everywhere, and yes, he is still one of the beloved characters that we see waddling around at Disneyworld.
Donald Duck has carved a special place in our hearts and he is certainly a character that we will never forget. His iconic yellow-orange bill, legs, and feet and his famous sailor shirt and cap with a bow tie has been a beacon of innocence for children everywhere.
Let’s not forget though, that Disney characters and movies become even more appealing to adults, once we are old enough to grasp the actual intentions of the stories and the morals behind them, it makes the stories even more wonderful.
Donald Duck has also made history, yes that’s right, Donal Duck is not just any Duck, he was named in TV Guide‘s list of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all time! Now that’s quite a big achievement for a little Duck.
How to celebrate Donald Duck Day
Donald Duck had some very specific characteristics, and celebrating Donald Duck day provides you with an opportunity to embrace your inner angry waterfowl.
Dress in blue and gold to commemorate everyone’s favorite Duck, and add just a splash of red to round it out. When people ask you questions, respond with the partially-legible quack that is Donald’s claim to fame and, whenever possible, fly into a comedic and harmless incoherent rage cussing out everything you loathe in a voice that no one can understand.
People may give you a funny look but, one of the great things about being Donald for a day is, you don’t have to care. Take a leaf out of Donald’s book and be bold, bright and enjoy the day! Afterall, that’s all we can do anyway isn’t it?
If your able, you have to go see this mastermind in the flesh so to speak and plan a trip to Disney! Its the time to take advantage of your booked up holidays and surprise the kids with a trip to see Donald!
If this isn’t an option, the best way to really celebrate dear old Donald, is to watch some of his old movies! He’s popped up in quite a few animations over the years!
No doubt hearing his quack and voice will remind you of the days of old, when life was simple and we recorded on VHS. Those were the days.
Another way to celebrate Donald Duck day is to re-read any books that Donald has been mentioned in over the years, his most famous one, of course, is Lost In The Andes and The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck!
These books will be worth a fortune one day, and many are collector’s items. Do you happen to have some of these books stashed away in your attic or in a box that was stashed in the basement in 1970?
I don’t but I wish I had any and all of the books with Donal Duck in them not for the money but because the books star Donald Duck. Then I could share my love of Donald Duck with my family.
Looking for these books will certainly inspire you to Spring clean around the house to see if you have any type of Donald Duck paraphernalia that will allow you to really embrace and celebrate the life and career of the well-loved Donald Duck!
Happy Birthday, Donald. We hope that Daisy Duck bakes you your favorite cake! If she doesn’t and you would like a Cake come visit Charlie and I and we will make you a Cake.
Let’s clebrate Donald Duck Day in honor of the Walt Disney Donald Duck’s cartoon debut. Donald first appeared in “The Wise Hen” on June 9, 1934. While Donald is over 70 years old, he doesn’t act a day over 20 and Donald is one of Disney’s most famous and popular characters.
Did you Know? Donald has a middle name. Donald F. Duck’s middle name is “Fauntleroy”.
Enjoy Donald Duck Day in front of the television watching Donald, along with all of your family and friends. We hope this special day is all that it is quacked up to be.
Donald Duck made his cartoon debut in “The Wise Little Hen” back in the Summer of 1934. But he wouldn’t meet Mickey Mouse until his second appearance in “Orphan’s Benefit” later that year.
From there, it wasn’t long before Daisy Duck and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie were introduced. In spite of their superior diction, they weren’t able to steal the spotlight from Donald.
You can’t replace his grumpy, nearly incomprehensible charm, and it’s why Donald has been in more movies (200+) than any Disney character. So, let’s celebrate.
Donald Ducks accomplishments doesn’t stop there. He co-hosted the Oscars in 1958 with a little help from Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, and Jimmy Stewart. Oh, and they named an asteroid after him in 1995.
If that doesn’t convince you he’s a force of nature, knowing that he has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame makes him a true icon. Now, we’re not sure how he left webbed foot prints in front of the Chinese Theater, but we’ll gladly roll with it. Well, what do you give to a duck that has it all? His own holiday.
National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day
It’s National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day, time to enjoy a slice of a pie you many never tried before. While Strawberry Rhubarb Pie has a long history, dating back to the 1800’s, not too many people have ever tried this Pie. People, especially the younger crowd, do not even know what Rhubarb is.
Did you know the Rhubarb plant has a long, thick, edible stem with good flavor, but a tart taste. Rhubarb recipes use Sugar to sweeten the dish. The leaves are not eaten, because there poisonous.
Through the years, debate has raged as to whether Rhubarb is a Vegetable, or a Fruit but Rhubarb is commonly thought of as a Fruit, which is the way it is used but Rhubarb is actually a Vegetable.
Are you ready to be adventuresome? Dig into a piece of Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. You will not be disappointed.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
