Welcome back to our series showing Unique Holidays: May 4th, 2021. Take a look at all the reasons to celebrate today and let me know which one you would most want to take part in and why.
National Bird Day is celebrated on January 5th
International Migratory Bird Day is observed on the second Saturday in May
People love birds and bird watching is a favorite pastime of millions of people. This is one of the most popular hobbies, and can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age.
With this popularity, it comes as no surprise that there is more than one day established to recognize, appreciate, and enjoy birds. i suggest you celebrate all of these days.
Now, let’s help to take some of the confusion around a number of distinctly different “bird” days:
Bird Day is the oldest of the days to recognize birds. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Bird Day was first observed on May 4, 1894. This was started by Charles Almanzo Babcock, superintendent of schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania.
By 1910, Bird Day was widely celebrated, often in conjunction with Arbor Day. Bird Day and Arbor Day events are focused upon conservation training and awareness.
National Bird Day was established by bird activists and it calls upon people to recognize the plight of captive Birds drawing attention to exploitation of birds in the U.S. pet industry. Organizers suggest we reflect upon the conditions of Birds held in captivity.
International Migratory Bird Day celebrates the incredible journey that migratory birds take each year. They travel thousands of miles between breeding grounds in North America, and their winter homes in Central and South America.
Organizers say this is a day to both support, and to increase awareness of conservation efforts in support of migratory birds. They suggest a field trip into a Woods to look for and enjoy migrating birds.
On each of these Bird Days, we encourage you to take a few minutes to watch and observe birds, and feed them.
Did You Know? Hummingbirds are the smallest migratory birds.
National Candied Orange Peel Day
Is dedicated to…you guessed it…. Candied orange peels! I am not sure I would like these but its because I don’t care for Oranges. But Charlie and David like them and I should make them Candied Orange Peels for a snack this week. Do you like them?
Before you ask what the heck is a Candied Orange Peel and, is it edible? The question is yes. If your a chef or a baker, then you know just what it Candied Orange Peel is, and how to use it.
For the rest of us, including my family we likely have enjoyed it in seasonal baked goods all of our lives, without even knowing we’ve eaten it. Can you imagine that?
Candied Orange Peels are a boiled, sliced, Sugar added treat. You can eat Candied Orange Peels by themselves but most often, they’re used in holiday cookies, snacks, and fruitcake.
Also see, National Fruitcake Day and Fruitcake Toss Day. Fruitcakes contain a lot of Candied Orange Peel.
National Teacher’s Day – Tuesday of first full week of May
Everybody who does something good, important, and valuable deserves a day in their honor. Teachers certainly are among the most deserving. National Teacher’s Day honors those understanding people whom we entrust our children to.
Teachers mold our kids in a positive direction. Affecting who they are and what they become. From Kindergarten through college, teachers are an important part of our children’s lives.
Let’s give ’em their due. If you happen to be a teacher reading this, we personally offer our thanks,. The future of America is in your hands.Yes,. before you ask this includes #Homeschool Teachers.
Renewal Day is a spectacular day of new, and old, beginnings.
Things get old and out of sorts and we lose touch with friends, or loved ones, and relationships end. For whatever reason, we “let “thigs” go. Well, whatever “it” is, today is the day to renew it, rejuvenate it.
When we think of “renewal”, we often think of relationships. We vow our marriage will never get old which it does. We swear we will remain close to our parents and siblings. Over the years, we don’t.
With a hug and a tear, we tell our college roommate we will call and write. The demands of everyday life keep us from calling or writing. Today is the day to change that.
Renewal Day is not limited to renewing relationships and social issues. You can also renew:
- Your nails
- Your hair color and/or style.
- Your figure
- Your hardwood floors
- The shine on your car.
- Your driver’s license
- A favorite magazine subscription
Star Wars Day is May the Fourth, because of a famous quote from the Sscience fiction series blockbuster “May the Force (Fourth) be with you”
Ways to Celebrate Star Wars Day:
- Watch any of the great Star Wars movies which David and Charlie would be on board to do. But not me because I am not a Star Wars fan. Are you?
- Have a Star Wars marathon, watch two or three (or 4) of the movies.
- Get out your laser sword and practice for the next invasion from the Evil Empire. Charlie and I can’t do this because we don’t have a Sword. Do you?
- Send a Star Wars day Ecard – of course they have them! I might have to send Charlie and David one. How about you?
- Have a Star Wars costume party. I would just need to visit Thrift Stores to get items for Charlie to use and he could do this for #Homeschool Drama Class.
- Play Star Wars Trivia.
Did you know some people call today “Luke Skywalker Day”?
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
