Meet the Author:
Sassafras Lowrey is a straight edge punk who grew up to become the 2013 winner of the Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Award. Sassafras’ LGBTQ+ Books: Kicked Out, Lost Boi, Roving Pack, Leather Ever After, and A Little Queermas Carol have been honored by organizations ranging from the National Leather Association to the American Library Association.
Sassafras is an All Star Trainer Of The Year Certified Trick Dog Instructor and has trained and competed in sports from dog agility and rally obedience to canine parkour and tricks.
Sassafras is a member of the Dog Writers Association of America and her work has appeared in leading national dog magazines such as Dogster, The Bark, and Whole Dog Journal.
Sassafras’ collection of lyric essays Healing/Heeling debuted as the #1 New Release in Pet Essays on Amazon. Sassafras’ picture book William To The Rescue the first book in Sassafras’ Bedtime Stories For Rescue Dogs released in 2019, and her training book TRICKS IN THE CITY: For Daring Dogs and the Humans That Love Them debuted as a #1 New Release on Amazon.
Sassafras has toured widely, giving readings, workshops, and keynotes at colleges, conferences, bookstores, festivals, and squats ranging from Atlanta to Berlin to NYC to Oakland to Amsterdam on topics ranging from the epidemic of LGBTQ Youth Homelessness to Leather Storytelling and Queer Fiction.
Sassafras has taught at LitReactor and the NYC Center For Fiction, is a two-time AWP Writer to Writer Mentor, and provides writing coaching to private clients.
Sassafras actively contributes to publications and literary journals and has been published widely in anthologies. In late 2018 Sassafras relocated to Portland, Oregon (from Brooklyn) with hir partner, and their beloved menagerie of dogs and cats.
