The Flip Side of History by Steve Silverman

The Mommies Reviews

This is a review for The Flip Side of History. I received to review. The thoughts in this review are mine and my families.

Even when things aren’t crazy it’s hard to get children interested in school but with Covid-19 things are so uncertain. Children may have a hard time settling down to study.

Which is what has been happening with Charlie. Knowing this I’ve been looking for new ways to get Charlie interested in school. Including letting Charlie help me put together his lesson plans for this year.

As well as helping me build our library and picking out what books Charlie wants to read this year. To keep Charlie on his toes I ‘ve put books in our reading nook Charlie doesn’t know about.

At times Charlie will be surprised and find new books he didn’t know about. I also included books I would like to sit down and read. Enhancing mine and Charlie’s reading.

One of the books you will find in our library is The Flip Side of History by Steve Silverman. I added The Flip Side of History to the library because through this novel Charlie will be able to study History.

The Flip Side of History contains Hidden History, Strange Stories, and Hard-to-Believe Headlines which I know will intrigue any student or even non-students. Including adults who love History.

What if there was a flip side to the history channel? What would you do with all the historical facts and tales left out of history textbooks? From the host of the popular Useless Information podcast, Steve Silverman, comes a collection of fun history facts, strange news, and lost stories.

If your like me your children want to live on Electronics including the computer. If we can use books to get them off Electronics you can bet your bottom dollar I will do that.

Especially if we can tie the book into a show on TV like the History Channel. A channel Charlie watches for school. Not only is the History Channel a TV show but it teaches Charlie.

Another fact I like about the History channel is David enjoys the History Channel and David watches this with Charlie. Bringing them closer together. As well as letting David become involved in Charlie’s learning.

I believe when I show The Flip Side of History to David and Charlie that the Authors is the creator of the Useless Information podcast, Steve Silverman. Who they listen to.

True Stories and random trivia that will entertain or liven up any conversation. In The Flip Side of History: Fascinating True Stories that Time Has Long Forgotten, read about common folk and not-so-common knowledge.

In this collection of thirty plus historical events, Steve Silverman provides fascinating stories and easy to read facts. Covering a wide variety of topics, these stories highlight the quirks, complexities, and curiousness of man.

I like how there are easy to read facts which Charlie can explore further and turn into Creative Writing Assignments. Or use for our Art class. As well as quick quizzes allowing me to make sure Charlie is actually paying attention to what he is reading and learning.

I like that there is a Table of Contents which we can sit down as a family and discuss what we will find in The Flip Side of History. When we study short stories there is a short story in The Flip Side of History we can discuss during this lesson.

You will also see Steve Silverman recommends other novels for us to read. Helping us to keep our learning of History going on and on. Allowing us to check out new Authors.

The Flip Side of History is broken down into chapters. Charlie and I can read one or two chapters a night. Then we discuss those chapters in class the next day. As well as discuss and draw the pictures that comes with that chapter for Art class.

About the Author

Steve Silverman has been a highly-regarded science teacher at Chatham High School in upstate New York for the past twenty-nine years and will retire in June 2020. Each year, on the second Tuesday in May, a number of students dress up as Mr. Silverman to celebrate Steve Silverman Day.

He has previously published Einstein’s Refrigerator and Lindbergh’s Artificial Heart. His collection of unusual stories began with a desire to add some pizazz to his classroom lectures.

As an early adopter of the internet, he quickly took advantage of the new opportunities that the World Wide Web offered and began to post some of his favorite stories online.

His Useless Information blog was one of the first 25,000 websites ever. Few people noticed that the website existed until Yahoo! chose it as its Pick of the Week on July 9, 1997.

In January 2008, the Useless Information Podcast was started and its audience has continued to grow ever since. The topics chosen for this book are a good reflection of the author’s personality. First, his role as an educator is clearly evident in his writing style.

The stories are humorous and fun to read, yet they unsuspectingly educate the reader at the same time. Making The Flip Side of History the perfect Homeschool resource.
