The United States government is a democracy. The word democracy comes from two Greek words: demos, which means “people,” and kratos, which means “rule”: The people rule.
Government gets its power from people who vote. Voting makes a democracy work, so it is both a right and a responsibility. Everyone who has the right to vote has a responsibility to learn about the candidates and to vote. That’s true for a local election as well as a national election for president.
This branch of government includes the Senate and the House of Representatives. Together, these legislative bodies are called Congress.
The police officers in your area work for the government, but not the federal government. That is also true of many teachers and university professors.
Washington, D.C., was created for just one reason—to be the seat of the United States government. Government business goes on every day in buildings throughout the city.
