How are you today? As we begin a new School year and not knowing what is happening in Charlies school since the teachers don’t bother to keep us informed when our students are having trouble. I knew I wanted to find websites Charlie could go and practice things he might be struggling with.
I would like to invite you to check out Maggie’s Earth Adventures which allows our children to work on Language Arts.
Maggie’s Earth Adventures
Age Range: 6-12 (Grades 1-7 approximately, with parental supervision)
This website offers lesson plans and interactive games in a variety of subject areas including five free grammar games that help kids learn about nouns, verbs, prefixes, suffixes, word endings, rhyming words, and how to edit written work. We are focusing on the Language Arts games for this review. The website’s objective is to educate children on environmental issues to protect and build a sustainable future for our planet. All of the games are themed around this objective.
When you get to the website you’ll see the icon, “Free Activities.” If you click on that, a new page opens where you can register (free) to receive the cross-curricular Maggie’s Earth Adventures Weekly Activity Packet (WAP) with lessons and games that will be delivered to your email inbox.Then, look at the main menu on the right side of the screen and click under “Have you played Maggie’s Games?” There are over a dozen games including:
- Super Match – Find words that rhyme.
- Short Circuit – Match prefixes and suffixes with their meanings to prevent a computer short circuit.
- Fish ‘Em Up – Catch word endings by determining if you have to double the consonant or change the y for the correct spelling.
- Edit Dan’s Copy – Edit Dan’s work for errors in capitalization and punctuation.
- Clean Up Your Grammar – In this game a virtual beach is littered with bad grammar. Help clean up nouns and verbs.
These games stand on their own as fun practice work for learning parts of speech, spelling rules, and other language arts skills. They are enhanced if you use the free lesson plans available by registering to get the free Weekly Activity Packs. By using the WAP, students will see the connectedness and relevance of language arts, math, science, geography, and social sciences to environmental issues.By the way, some of the games are available in Spanish as well!
