Layer Upon Layer by Deedee Horton

The Mommies Reviews

I wanted to share a new book with you called Layer Upon Layer by Deedee Horton (Author) I received a copy of the book in exchange for this review. Inside this post is my affiliate link. If you click on the link and make a purchase I will make a small percentage from the products you purchase.

In Layer Upon Layer the Author is combining the life of a female athlete as a high school senior and her life as a coach 20 years later. For me at times the book felt a little technical andcould be a bit tedius but I wanted to finish the story. Even though its for women I asked Charlie to read the story because he loves #Basketball.

Charlie said the Author had to write the story this way for people to understand what the character faced and why. I enjoyed watching her grow from a determined basketball player into a powerful coach and mentor, overcoming personal and external challenges at every turn.

The author worked on this book for 6 years. After her first edit, she discovered she had an inoperable brain tumor and died 8 months later. Her husband has spent years finishing the project that is now complete. I would like to ask you to read Layer Upon Layer and to share the book with everyone you know. Help us celebrate her life and her husbands hard work.

About the book:

Seventeen-year-old Samantha Shuster dreams of playing Division I basketball and has the talent, drive, and passion to succeed-but she’s coming face-to-face with the harsh reality of gender bias on and off the court. Overcoming discouragement from her critics, including her Coach and her own father, Sam’s determination and love for the game propel her forward.

Twenty years later, Sam is coaching at the collegiate level. While mentoring a player going through a personal crisis, Sam realizes that she has been nurturing young women along their paths to self-acceptance while neglecting her own.

As she begins to uncover complex layers of expectations, societal biases, and self-doubt that have shaped her life and the lives of other women, she embarks on a powerful journey of self-acceptance and discovery.

For Athletes: Layer Upon Layer resonates with athletes through Sam’s journey of overcoming challenges to pursue her passion. It highlights the impact of mentorship, perseverance, and staying true to one’s goals.

For Men: Through David’s perspective, Layer Upon Layer offers insights into the female experience, encouraging men to support gender equality by understanding and championing women’s challenges.

For Women: Layer Upon Layer is an empowering story of resilience and self-acceptance. Sam’s journey reflects the struggles women face in sports and society, inspiring readers to embrace their strength and the power of positive role models.

Meet the Author:

DeeDee (Bailey) Horton had a passion for writing since youth. She grew up a gifted athlete who alternated between collegiate volleyball and basketball-as does her protagonist in Layer Upon Layer. After teaching middle school, where she especially enjoyed teaching writing, DeeDee returned to her love of sports as a college basketball coach for more than a decade.

After retirement, she wrote Layer Upon Layer, pulling from her athletic experience to shed light on the importance of mentors and positive female narratives that bring constructive change to women. While beginning final edits, DeeDee was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. She entrusted her husband, David, with the completion of Layer Upon Layer while prioritizing the writing of two “Love Books” to carry him through the grief ahead.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
